John 3:1-21

In this familiar portion of Scripture we see a religious man come to Jesus.

Many people are religious today but lost.

Are you sure about your salvation this morning?

Do you know for sure your going to heaven when you die?

The Bible says we must be born again.

What happened to Nicodemus that night when he came to Jesus?

Nicodemus came in darkness. That is while he was yet in sin.

A. Why did Nicodemus come?

Much is said about his cowardice for coming by night, but why did Nicodemus come at all.

1. Because he felt empty.

He knew something was missing.

One who is lost will realize that something is missing.

Jonah 2:8‑9

8They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy.

9 But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanks giving;

I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD.

2. He came because the Holy Spirit was drawing Him by conviction.

John 16:7-11

7      Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you

that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not

come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

8      And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin,

and of righteousness, and of judgment:

9      Of sin, because they believe not on me;

10    Of righteousness, because I go to my Father,

and ye see me no more;

11    Of judgment, because the prince of this world

is judged.

John 6:44

No man can come to me, except the Father which hath

sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.

B. What did he hear?

1. That he was condemned ( vs 3)

Because he was not born again.

He had rejected Jesus Christ.

John 3:17-18

17    For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn

the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

18    He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he

that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath

not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

Nicodemus realized that he was a sinner.

Rom 3:23

For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

Rom 5:12

12    Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world,

and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for

that all have sinned:

Because of his sin Nicodemus deserved to die and spend

eternity in the lake of fire.

Rom 6:23

23    For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is

eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Rev 20:14-15

14    And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire.

This is the second death.

15    And whosoever was not found written in the book

of life was cast into the lake of fire.

2. He could be born again (vs 5-7)

Rom 5:8

But God commendeth his love toward us, in that,

while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

1 Peter 2:24

24    Who his own self bare our sins in his own body

on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto

righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

2 Cor 5:21

21    For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew

no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of

God in him.

Rom 10:9-10

9      That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the

Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God

hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

10    For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness;

and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Rom 10:13

13    For whosoever shall call upon the name of the

Lord shall be saved.

vs 9 Nicodemus ask how can these things be?

Matt 7:7‑8

7      Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye

shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:

8      For every one that asketh receiveth; and he

that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it

shall be opened.

A. It is a rebirth

not a new leaf

not doing better

not the old life cleaned up

but a rebirth - born again - a spiritual birth.

2 Cor 5:17

17    Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature:

old things are passed away; behold, all things are become

B. By faith (not head knowledge)

Eph 2:8-9

8      For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that

not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

9      Not of works, lest any man should boast.

C. By receiving the witness (vs 11)

John 12:48

48    He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words,

hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken,

the same shall judge him in the last day.

The witness is from Christ.  It may echo through this

preacher or any other Christian, but the message is

from God.

Those who bring the plan of salvation from God’s Word are only messengers.

Jesus is the Savior. He came to save not condemn.

Nicodemus received Jesus Christ that day as his own personal Savior.

John 19:39

39    And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to

Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes,

about an hundred pound weight.

You to can be saved today.

If you have never been saved, today is the day of salvation.

2 Cor 6:2

2      (For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted,

and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold,

now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.)

John 1:12

12    But as many as received him, to them gave he

power to become the sons of God, even to them

that believe on his name:

A. Why do men not come to the Light?

1. They love darkness - sin

2. They do not want to admit their sin

Luke 13:3,5

3      I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent,

ye shall all likewise perish.

5      I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent,

ye shall all likewise perish.

B. Why men come to the light.

1. For salvation - to make things right with God.

Col 1:21

21    And you, that were sometime alienated and

enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now

hath he reconciled

2. To do right - once turned from sin one wants to do right

Make a commitment to God that from this point forward

I want to serve You with all my heart.

Luke 14:27‑30

27    And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and

come after me, cannot be my disciple.

28    For which of you, intending to build a tower,

sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether

he have sufficient to finish it?

29    Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and

is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock

30    Saying, This man began to build, and was not

able to finish.

Josh 24:15

15    And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD,

choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the

gods which your fathers served that were on the other

side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose

land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will

serve the LORD.

1 Kings 18:21

21    And Elijah came unto all the people, and said,

How long halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD

be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And

the people answered him not a word.
