Matt 3:2

Matt 3:1‑3  1 In those days came John the

             Baptist, preaching in the

             wilderness of Judaea,

2 And saying, Repent ye: for

the kingdom of heaven is at

3 For this is he that was

spoken of by the prophet Esaias,

saying, The voice of one crying

             in the wilderness, Prepare ye

the way of the Lord, make his

             paths straight.

  Repent? why?

Because the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

Matt 4:16‑17 16 The people which sat in

               darkness saw great light; and

to them which sat in the

               region and shadow of death

               light is sprung up.

17 From that time Jesus began

to preach, and to say, Repent:

for the kingdom of heaven is

               at hand.

What is the kingdom of heaven?

It is mentioned only in the book of Matthew.

It is not mentioned in any other book including the other three gospels.

Yet 32 times in the book of Matthew we are told of the kingdom of heaven.

Because the book of Matthew is written to the Jew.

The Jews were looking for a kingdom.

They were looking for the Messiah to come to set up His kingdom.

  But they rejected the king.

What then is the meaning for the kingdom of heaven?

Is it different than that of the Kingdom of God?

The kingdom of God is that in which God reigns.

Luke 17:21 Neither shall they say, Lo here!

or, lo there! for, behold, the

kingdom of God is within you.

If God reigns in your heart and life then you are part of His kingdom.

The unsaved are not His and therefore are not part of His kingdom.

John 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil,

and the lusts of your father ye

will do. He was a murderer from

the beginning, and abode not in

the truth, because there is no

truth in him. When he speaketh a

lie, he speaketh of his own: for

he is a liar, and the father of

What is the kingdom of heaven?

It is the place where God reigns Sovereign.

God reigns in the affairs of the earth.

  God created it. Perfect.

  Sin entered through Satan.

The sinful take it by force.

This earth belongs to God it was created to serve righteousness.

  Matt 11:12

And from the days of John the

Baptist until now the kingdom of

             heaven suffereth violence, and

the violent take it by force.

  Romans 8:22

For we know that the whole

              creation groaneth and

              travaileth in pain together

              until now.

  Romans 8:23

              And not only they, but

              ourselves also, which have the

              firstfruits of the Spirit, even

              we ourselves groan within

              ourselves, waiting for the

              adoption, to wit, the

              redemption of our body.

God was separated from man through sin.

God gave the law that men may know how to live.

But man could not live up to the law.

God knew this. But man had to be shown.

God sent His Son to die in man's place and

by receiving the Lord Jesus as personal

Savior, men may have a place in heaven.

Where is heaven? and where is the kingdom of heaven?

Matt 13:11 He answered and said unto them,

Because it is given unto you to

             know the mysteries of the

kingdom of heaven, but to them

             it is not given.

  Matt 13:24 Tares & wheat

Matt 13:31 Grain of mustard seed

  Matt 13:33 Leaven

  Matt 13:44 treasure

  Matt 13:45 merchant

  Matt 13:47 Net

Jesus and John said the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

If the kingdom of God is where God reigns.

Then the kingdom of heaven is where God's people live.

Those who receive Christ are heavenly citizens as apposed to

   citizens of this world.

Heb 11:10 For he looked for a city which

            hath foundations, whose builder

            and maker is God.

Heb 11:16 But now they desire a better

            country, that is, an heavenly:

wherefore God is not ashamed to

be called their God: for he hath

            prepared for them a city.

Heb 12:22 But ye are come unto mount Sion,

and unto the city of the living

            God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and

            to an innumerable company of

Heb 12:28 Wherefore we receiving a kingdom

which cannot be moved, let us

have grace, whereby we may serve

            God acceptably with reverence and

            godly fear:

Jesus and John the Baptist preached repentance because with out repentance one

cannot have entrance into God's kingdom.

Then Jesus tells us what is expected of the heavenly citizen.

If we are born again then we should behave as heavenly citizens.

A.               Heard preaching of the Gospel

Matt 10:7 And as ye go, preach, saying, The

kingdom of heaven is at hand.

   Matt 25:1 ff

     A. more than a profession

Matt 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me,

Lord, Lord, shall enter into the

kingdom of heaven; but he that

doeth the will of my Father which

            is in heaven.

     B. righteous

Matt 5:19‑20 19 Whosoever therefore shall

              break one of these least

              commandments, and shall teach

men so, he shall be called the

least in the kingdom of heaven:

              but whosoever shall do and

teach them, the same shall be

called great in the kingdom of

20 For I say unto you, That

              except your righteousness shall

              exceed the righteousness of the

              scribes and Pharisees, ye shall

in no case enter into the

              kingdom of heaven.

     C. To church

Matt 16:15‑20 15 He saith unto them, But

whom say ye that I am?

                16 And Simon Peter answered

                and said, Thou art the

Christ, the Son of the living

                17 And Jesus answered and

                said unto him, Blessed art

                thou, Simon Barjona: for

                flesh and blood hath not

revealed it unto thee, but my

                Father which is in heaven.

18 And I say also unto thee,

That thou art Peter, and upon

this rock I will build my

church; and the gates of hell

                shall not prevail against it.

19 And I will give unto thee

the keys of the kingdom of

                heaven: and whatsoever thou

shalt bind on earth shall be

                bound in heaven: and

                whatsoever thou shalt loose

on earth shall be loosed in

     D. To humility

          1.As a child

Matt 18:1‑4  1 At the same time came the

              disciples unto Jesus, saying,

Who is the greatest in the

              kingdom of heaven?

2 And Jesus called a little

child unto him, and set him in

              the midst of them,

3 And said, Verily I say unto

              you, Except ye be converted,

              and become as little children,

ye shall not enter into the

              kingdom of heaven.

               4 Whosoever therefore shall

              humble himself as this little

child, the same is greatest in

              the kingdom of heaven.

Matt 19:14 But Jesus said, Suffer little

             children, and forbid them not,

to come unto me: for of such is

             the kingdom of heaven.

Matt 5:3 Blessed are the poor in spirit:

for theirs is the kingdom of

  Rich will scarcely be saved

Matt 19:24 And again I say unto you, It is

easier for a camel to go through

the eye of a needle, than for a

rich man to enter into the

             kingdom of God.
