RENEWING THE HEART
23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
10 And have put on the new man, which
is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:
If we would please God we must make frequent evaluations
of our heart to see if we are pleasing in God’s sight.
Are we burning for Jesus?
Are we accomplishing the purpose for which God created us?
When was the last time you led a soul to Christ or
had a visitor in church?
Are you giving to the extent that God can bless you?
Is there room for spiritual growth in our life?
We must renew our hearts.
I. HINDRANCES TO RENEWING
A. Deceitfulness of the heart
9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and
desperately wicked: who can know it?
B. Do not prepare
2 Chr 12:14
14 And he did evil, because he prepared
not his heart to seek the LORD.
20 They that are of a froward heart are abomination
to the LORD: but such as are upright in their way are his delight.
10 Wherefore I was grieved with that generation,
and said, They do alway err in their heart;
and they have not known my ways.
C. Do Not See
18 Having the understanding darkened, being
alienated from the life of God through the ignorance
that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:
D. Double Heart
Trying to please God but hold on to the world
at the same time.
2 They speak vanity every one with his neighbour:
with flattering lips and with a double heart do they speak.
6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering.
For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea
driven with the wind and tossed.
8 A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.
E. Denying Hard Heart
52 For they considered not the miracle of the loaves:
for their heart was hardened.
5 And Jesus answered and said unto them, For the
hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept.
14 Afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat,
and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart,
because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen.
Sometimes pride causes us to harden our hearts. We believe we are r
ight and we will not change. Or we believe we are above change.
16 Thy terribleness hath deceived thee, and the pride of
thine heart, O thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock,
that holdest the height of the hill: though thou shouldest
make thy nest as high as the eagle, I will bring thee down
from thence, saith the LORD.
F. Desiring fleshly pleasure
7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God:
for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed
The carnal mind is enmity against God.
We cannot please God when we are against Him.
II. HELPS TO RENEWING
A. Regeneration - must
3 Jesus answered and said unto him,
Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man
be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
7 Marvel not that I said unto thee,
Ye must be born again.
B. Review God’s dealings
God in His mercy is reaching out to us
9 Then I said, I will not make mention
of him, nor speak any more in his name.
But his word was in mine heart as a burning
fire shut up in my bones, and I was weary
with forbearing, and I could not stay.
1 The preparations of the heart in man,
and the answer of the tongue, is from the LORD.
1 Thes 3:13
13 To the end he may stablish your hearts
unblameable in holiness before God, even our
Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ
with all his saints.
C. Resist Temptation in the tests
1 Chr 29:17
17 I know also, my God, that thou triest the
heart, and hast pleasure in uprightness.
As for me, in the uprightness of mine heart
I have willingly offered all these things: and
now have I seen with joy thy people, which
are present here, to offer willingly unto thee.
9 Oh let the wickedness of the wicked
come to an end; but establish the just: for
the righteous God trieth the hearts and reins.
2 Examine me, O LORD, and prove me;
try my reins and my heart.
3 The fining pot is for silver, and the
furnace for gold: but the LORD trieth the hearts.
1 Thes 2:4
4 But as we were allowed of God to be put in
trust with the gospel, even so we speak; not as
pleasing men, but God, which trieth our hearts.
17 By faith Abraham, when he was tried,
offered up Isaac: and he that had received
the promises offered up his only begotten son,
D. Render Obedience to God
12 And now, Israel, what doth the
LORD thy God require of thee, but to
fear the LORD thy God, to walk in all
his ways, and to love him, and to serve
the LORD thy God with all thy heart
and with all thy soul,
6 Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers;
but as the servants of Christ, doing the will
of God from the heart;
12 Blessed art thou, O LORD: teach me thy statutes.
E. Remain Faithful to God
7 He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the LORD.
5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and
lean not unto thine own understanding.
F. Remember your love for God
37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy
God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and
with all thy mind.
A. If we do not renew
1. Wickedness increases
5 And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was
great in the earth, and that every imagination of the
thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
2. Wrath of God is immanent
5 But after thy hardness and impenitent heart
treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day
of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment
3. We show our foolishness
23 A prudent man concealeth knowledge:
but the heart of fools proclaimeth foolishness.
C. The Heart Lives Forever
26 The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall
praise the LORD that seek him: your heart shall live
D. God Knows the Heart
1 Sam 16:7
7 But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on
his countenance, or on the height of his stature;
because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not
as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward
appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.
11 For he knoweth vain men: he seeth wickedness
also; will he not then consider it?
4 Doth not he see my ways, and count all my steps?
6 For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous:
but the way of the ungodly shall perish.
1 O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me.
2 Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the
LORD pondereth the hearts.
Let us examine ourselves this morning.
Do not let your heart deceive you.
Come and do business with God.
