OTHERS MAY BUT YOU MUST NOT

2 Cor 6:14‑7:1

  1. Others may have no standards

 2. even other Christians may lower their

standards ‑ but we must not

  3. We are the salt of the earth

Matt 5:13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but

if the salt have lost his savour,

wherewith shall it be salted? it

            is thenceforth good for nothing,

but to be cast out, and to be

            trodden under foot of men.

  4. Our standard is the Word of God

  5. Our aim is to please God

  6. Separation is ‑ The power to live in the

world but to not be of the world.

  7. Christians are believers ‑ distinct from

   vs. 14   unbelievers

  8. Workers of righteousness ‑ not

  unrighteousness

  9. children of light ‑ not darkness

  10. belong to Christ  ‑ not Belial vs. 15

  11. Part of the temple of God ‑ no part of idols vs 16

  12. Christians are to come out and be

separate from those who do not love God and

who deny the Lord. vs. 17

  13. Wherefore or because of the above

      vs. 17

  14. Christian separation is a very

important part of the believer's life.

It is vital to the believer's testimony.

  And to pleasing God.

  15. Let us examine this very important

  doctrine in light of Scripture.

  I. THE DOCTRINE OF SEPARATION IS A VERY

     PROMINENT BIBLICAL DOCTRINE.

Gen. 1:4 And God saw the light, that it was

good: and God divided the light

           from the darkness.

Gen 17:10‑14 10 This is my covenant, which

ye shall keep, between me and

               you and thy seed after thee;

               Every man child among you

               shall be circumcised.

11 And ye shall circumcise the

flesh of your foreskin; and it

shall be a token of the

               covenant betwixt me and you.

12 And he that is eight days

               old shall be circumcised among

you, every man child in your

               generations, he that is born

in the house, or bought with

               money of any stranger, which

               is not of thy seed.

13 He that is born in thy

house, and he that is bought

with thy money, must needs be

               circumcised: and my covenant

shall be in your flesh for an

               everlasting covenant.

               14 And the uncircumcised man

               child whose flesh of his

               foreskin is not circumcised,

that soul shall be cut off

               from his people; he hath

               broken my covenant.

  2. Why was the Law given ‑

  3. Why was the Jew forbidden to eat pork

  and certain fish (lev 11:7 & 12)

  4. Why was he not allowed to plow with an

ox and an ass together (Deut. 22:10)

  5. to plant 2 kinds of seed together (lev

     19:13)

  6. to wear wool and linen (lev 19:19)

  7. all these remind the Jew that he is

  separate from the world

  8. Ex 10:26 Our cattle also shall go with

us; there shall not an hoof be

              left behind; for thereof must

we take to serve the LORD our

God; and we know not with what

we must serve the LORD, until

              we come thither.

Ex 11:7 But against any of the children

of Israel shall not a dog move

             his tongue, against man or

beast: that ye may know how that

the LORD doth put a difference

             between the Egyptians and

             Israel.

God brings His people out of the world and

makes a distinction between them and the

  world.

  9. Moses prayer

Ex 33:15‑16 15 And he said unto him, If thy

presence go not with me, carry

              us not up hence.

16 For wherein shall it be

known here that I and thy

people have found grace in thy

sight? is it not in that thou

goest with us? so shall we be

              separated, I and thy people,

from all the people that are

upon the face of the earth.

  God's Promise

Lev 20:24 But I have said unto you, Ye

shall inherit their land, and I

will give it unto you to possess

it, a land that floweth with milk

and honey: I am the LORD your

            God, which have separated you

            from other people.

2 Tim 2:19 Nevertheless the foundation of

            God standeth sure, having this

seal, The Lord knoweth them that

are his. And, Let every one that

nameth the name of Christ depart

            from iniquity.

II. THE DOCTRINE OF SEPARATION TOUCHES

EVERY PART OF THE BELIEVER'S LIFE

  1. Personal ‑ Public

  2. Pleasures, amusement, habits, food,

  3. Dress, books, friends

  4. the outward appearance and the inward

     emotion and thoughts

2 Cor 7:1 Having therefore these promises,

            dearly beloved, let us cleanse

            ourselves from all filthiness of

            the flesh and spirit, perfecting

holiness in the fear of God.

  5. 7 questions to ask and answer when it

comes to doubtful action or behavior.

     1. will it glorify God  ‑ or not

     2. will it promote or endanger my

        Christian life & testimony?

     3. will it help or hinder a weaker

        brother

     4. will it help or hinder my witness

     5. will it please or grieve the Holy

        Spirit

     6. will it lead me into or out of God's

        will

     7. will it adorn the doctrine of God

Tit 2:10 Not purloining, but shewing all

good fidelity; that they may adorn

the doctrine of God our Saviour in

           all things.

III. A SPECIAL PROMISE IS MADE TO ALL WHO LIVE A SEPARATED LIFE

2 Cor 6:17‑18 17 Wherefore come out from

                among them, and be ye

                separate, saith the Lord, and

                touch not the unclean thing;

                and I will receive you,

18 And will be a Father unto

you, and ye shall be my sons

                and daughters, saith the Lord

                Almighty.

  A. I will receive you

  B. I will be a Father unto you

  C. ye shall be my sons and daughters

  Luke 15:11‑24 the Prodigal son

  1. He was a son but went into a far country

  ‑ out of fellowship

  2. the unseparated life is like the

prodigal son ‑ in a far country ‑

backslidden ‑ living away from God our

  father ‑ immature ‑ disobedient

  3. When the prodigal son returned what was

  the father's response?

     1) he received him (Luke 15:20‑21)

     2) he became a father to him in a way

that he could not when he was away

     (22‑23)

     3) he dealt with him as a son ‑ 24

  Conclusion:

Other Christians may be worldly ‑

dishonoring ‑ going to questionable places,

mixing with those who ridicule and  blaspheme     God.

  BUT YOU CANNOT!

If we want to please God we MUST NOT!

If we want Jesus to work in us we cannot ‑

living His life through us we cannot

Heb 7:26 For such an high priest became us,

           who is holy, harmless, undefiled,

           separate from sinners, and made

           higher than the heavens;

2 Cor 6:17‑18 17 Wherefore come out from

among them, and be ye separate,

saith the Lord, and touch not

the unclean thing; and I will

              receive you,

18 And will be a Father unto

you, and ye shall be my sons

              and daughters, saith the Lord

              Almighty.

2 Cor 7:1 Having therefore these promises,

          dearly beloved, let us cleanse

          ourselves from all filthiness of

          the flesh and spirit, perfecting

holiness in the fear of God.
