HOW TO AVOID THE SHIPWRECK

(ITimothy 1:19)

Introduction:

1 Tim 1:19

19    Holding faith, and a good conscience;

which some having put away concerning faith

have made shipwreck:

God compares life with a ship sailing on

life's sea.

A)The ship has no control over its build.

We have no control over our make‑up.

God made us the way we are. He made

    each of us unique.

Jer 13:23

23    Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard

his spots? then may ye also do good, that are

accustomed to do evil.

Jer 1:4‑5

4      Then the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,

5      Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and

before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified

thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.

Ps 139:13‑16

13    For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast

covered me in my mother's womb.

14    I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and

wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works;

and that my soul knoweth right well.

15    My substance was not hid from thee,

when I was made in secret, and curiously

wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.

16    Thine eyes did see my substance, yet

being unperfect; and in thy book all my

members were written, which in continuance

were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.

Isa 64:8

8      But now, O LORD, thou art our father;

we are the clay, and thou our potter; and

we all are the work of thy hand.

B)The ship has no control over the sea.

We have no control over the world.

We were born into it and we must live in it

until we reach the other shore.

It is controlled by Satan its prince. There is danger on every hand.

In order to avoid shipwreck there are several necessities for a ship.

I.THE SHIP NEEDS A CAPTAIN.

A.The Captain is responsible for the safety of the ship

    and its crew.

    Jesus is our captain

Heb 2:10

10    For it became him, for whom are all things, and by

whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory,

to make the captain of their salvation perfect through

sufferings.

Eph 1:22

22    And hath put all things under his feet, and

gave him to be the head over all things to the church,

Col 1:18

18    And he is the head of the body, the church:

who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead;

that in all things he might have the preeminence.

Col 2:19

19    And not holding the Head, from which all the

body by joints and bands having nourishment

ministered, and knit together, increaseth with

the increase of God.

B.The Captain is the person in

    command‑‑‑the one person to

    please.

1 Tim 2:1‑6

1      I exhort therefore, that, first of all,

supplications, prayers, intercessions,

and giving of thanks, be made for all men;

2      For kings, and for all that are in

authority; that we may lead a quiet and

peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.

3      For this is good and acceptable in

the sight of God our Saviour;

4      Who will have all men to be

saved, and to come unto the knowledge

of the truth.

5      For there is one God, and one

mediator between God and men,

the man Christ Jesus;

6      Who gave himself a ransom

for all, to be testified in due time.

II.THE SHIP NEEDS A CREW ‑‑‑ FELLOWSHIP

A.Fellowship is essential to accomplishing God's will.

Rom 12:4‑5

4      For as we have many members in one body,

and all members have not the same office:

5      So we, being many, are one body in Christ,

and every one members one of another.

1 Cor 10:17

17    For we being many are one bread,

and one body: for we are all partakers

of that one bread.

  B.Fellowship is essential to success

    (Ex.17:12) Moses hands were tired

but when Aaron and Hur held up his

    hands victory was accomplished

    (ISam.14:6) Jonathan and his

armourbearer, as Jonathan fought the Philistines

    (Ezra 10:4) encourage revival

Ezra was encouraged by Shechaniah as they prayed together

    (Neh.4:16‑17) to accomplish great things

Neh 4:16‑17

16    And it came to pass from that time forth, that the half of my servants wrought in the work, and the other half of them held both the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the habergeons; and the rulers were behind all the house of Judah.

17    They which builded on the wall, and they that bare burdens, with those that laded, every one with one of his hands wrought in the work, and with the other hand held a weapon.

(Mat.18:19) to add to power in prayer

Matt 18:19

19    Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.

(Mk.2:3) to bring men to Christ

Mark 2:3

3      And they come unto him, bringing one sick of the palsy, which was borne of four.

III. THE SHIP NEEDS A MEANS TO DETECT DANGER

The believer has a three fold

      system to detect danger

A.The BIBLE is the light which reveals danger

Ps 19:8

8      The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing

the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure,

enlightening the eyes.

Ps 119:105

105  Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a

light unto my path.

Ps 119:130

130  The entrance of thy words giveth

light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.

Prov 6:23

23    For the commandment is a lamp;

and the law is light; and reproofs of

instruction are the way of life:

       1. It reveals sin  (Gal.5:19‑21 Heb.4:12‑13)

Gal 5:19‑21

19    Now the works of the flesh are manifest,

which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, l

asciviousness,

20    Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance,

emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,

21    Envyings, murders, drunkenness,

revellings, and such like: of the which I tell

you before, as I have also told you in time past,

that they which do such things shall not

inherit the kingdom of God.

Heb 4:12‑13

12    For the word of God is quick, and powerful,

and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing

even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit,

and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner

of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

13    Neither is there any creature that is not

manifest in his sight: but all things are naked

and opened unto the eyes of him with whom

we have to do.

2.it reveals the extent of the danger of sin

Rom 7:13

13    Was then that which is good made death unto me?

God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working

death in me by that which is good; that sin by the

commandment might become exceeding sinful.

3.it reveals the fruit of the Spirit (Gal.5:22‑23)

Gal 5:22‑23

22    But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace,

longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,

23    Meekness, temperance: against such

there is no law.

B.The Holy Spirit is the alarm that sounds

when the ship is going off coarse

John 16:7‑13

7      Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient

for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter

will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him

unto you.

8      And when he is come, he will reprove the

world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

9      Of sin, because they believe not on me;

10    Of righteousness, because I go to my Father,

and ye see me no more;

11    Of judgment, because the prince of this

world is judged.

12    I have yet many things to say unto you,

but ye cannot bear them now.

13    Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is

come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall

not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall

hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew

you things to come.

C.The conscience reveals the closeness of

        the danger (Rom.2:15;Heb.9:14)

Rom 2:15‑16

15    Which shew the work of the law written in their

hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and

their thoughts the mean while accusing or else

excusing one another;)

16    In the day when God shall judge the secrets

of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel.

Heb 9:14

14    How much more shall the blood of Christ,

who through the eternal Spirit offered himself

without spot to God, purge your conscience from

dead works to serve the living God?

1.a good conscience‑‑‑reveals conduct pleasing to

God

Acts 24:16

16    And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a

conscience void of offence toward God, and toward men.

Rom 9:1

1      I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my

conscience also bearing me witness in

the Holy Ghost,

1 Tim 1:19

19    Holding faith, and a good conscience;

which some having put away concerning

faith have made shipwreck:

1 Tim 1:5

5      Now the end of the commandment is

charity out of a pure heart, and of a good

conscience, and of faith unfeigned:

1 Tim 3:9

9      Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.

        2.   a guilty conscience ‑‑‑ reveals conduct

unworthy of Gods approval (Jn.8:9;Ezra 9:6)

John 8:9

9      And they which heard it, being convicted

by their own conscience, went out one by one,

beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and

Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing

in the midst.

Ezra 9:6

6      And said, O my God, I am ashamed and

blush to lift up my face to thee, my God: for our

iniquities are increased over our head, and our

trespass is grown up unto the heavens.

   Conclusion:

1.Without Christ as saviour our life

  is without meaning and purpose

and headed into the lake of fire

2.Without fellowship we cannot accomplish

God's purpose we need each other

3.If God has brought conviction then today is

the to align ourselves With God's Word

today is the day to start living the victorious life

Prevent shipwreck be a ship that brings blessing.
