EXCUSES

Luke 14:18; James 4:7

A reason given as a grounds to be excused.

God has a plan for each of us. He has

  designed us for a purpose.

When we operate outside the purpose

  which God intends.

We make excuses to ease our own minds of

  the guilt that sin brings.

  The Bible says in

James 4:17 Therefore to him that knoweth to

do good, and doeth it not, to

             him it is sin.

And when we sin guilt begins to rise.

We know that there is something wrong.

So we try to ease the guilt by reasoning.

We want to find a reason for our sin that

could place the blame on someone or

  something else.

For, we say, I'm not a bad person so the

  blame must not be mine.

We try first of all to convince ourselves

  that we are innocent.

Then we try to convince others that we are

  innocent.

Then rather than to confess our sin, we try

to convince God that we are innocent by

  reason of extenuating circumstances.

But what happens when we offer our excuses

  to God.

  Our sin goes unforgiven.

  God cannot forgive excuses.

If our sin is unforgiven we cannot expect

  God to bless our life.

We have sin that blocks God's blessings.

I want to examine several offenses for

  which we make excuses.

  I. EXCUSES FOR NOT BEING SAVED

     A. It is just not the right time.

        I am not ready.

Acts 24:25 And as he reasoned of

             righteousness, temperance, and

             judgment to come, Felix

             trembled, and answered, Go thy

way for this time; when I have a

             convenient season, I will call

             for thee.

There is no mention of Felix ever being saved.

If you are putting off being saved Satan has you deceived into thinking that you can

be saved any time you want to.

If the Holy Spirit of God is dealing with you about salvation that is the time to be

  saved.

He may not deal with you again this side of eternity.

2 Cor 6:2 (For he saith, I have heard thee

in a time accepted, and in the

day of salvation have I succoured

thee: behold, now is the accepted

time; behold, now is the day of

            salvation.)

     B. I am too busy with my life to get involved with religion

Luke 14:18 And they all with one consent

began to make excuse. The first

said unto him, I have bought a

piece of ground, and I must

needs go and see it: I pray thee

             have me excused.

1.        I bought into a philosophy that I can get

through this life on my own.

I want to wait and see if it is what I thought.

If things get too difficult I will see about your way.

If this is your way of looking at life, Satan has you right where he wants you.

He will give you just enough out of life to keep you from ever accepting Christ.

Prov 14:12 There is a way which seemeth

right unto a man, but the end

thereof are the ways of death.

2.      I am doing good.

I am a hard worker.

I will prove myself.

Given time my good will out weigh my bad and I will be justified.

Luke 14:19 And another said, I have bought

five yoke of oxen, and I go to

prove them: I pray thee have me

             excused.

All the good works in the world cannot make me right.

  This is another excuse.

Titus 3:5 Not by works of righteousness

which we have done, but according

to his mercy he saved us, by the

            washing of regeneration, and

            renewing of the Holy Ghost;

There is only one way to be saved that is by throwing ourselves upon His mercy.

     C. I cannot be saved because of the people I am around.

I am not strong enough to keep myself from sin.

Luke 14:20 And another said, I have married

a wife, and therefore I cannot

             come.

I can't get saved because I need to spend time with my family.

The only time I have is Sunday and that is our family day.

No time for God. No place for God in my life.

Rev 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door, and

knock: if any man hear my voice,

and open the door, I will come in

to him, and will sup with him, and

           he with me.

What excuse can one offer for not accepting God's invitation to salvation.

Rom 1:20 For the invisible things of him

from the creation of the world

              are clearly seen, being

              understood by the things that

              are made, even his eternal

power and Godhead; so that they

              are without excuse:

We have no excuse for being without Christ.

  II. EXCUSES FOR SIN

     A. Blame others

Gen 3:12 And the man said, The woman whom

thou gavest to be with me, she

gave me of the tree, and I did

           eat.

Gen 3:13 And the LORD God said unto the

woman, What is this that thou hast

done? And the woman said, The

serpent beguiled me, and I did

           eat.

  Our sin is our fault.

Romans 14:10 But why dost thou judge thy

brother? or why dost thou set

at nought thy brother? for we

               shall all stand before the

               judgment seat of Christ.

2 Cor 5:10 For we must all appear before

             the judgment seat of Christ;

that every one may receive the

             things done in his body,

according to that he hath done,

whether it be good or bad.

  B. I had no choice

Lot wanted to stay in that wicked city of Sodom.

Gen 19:19 Behold now, thy servant hath

found grace in thy sight, and

            thou hast magnified thy mercy,

which thou hast shewed unto me in

saving my life; and I cannot

escape to the mountain, lest some

evil take me, and I die:

Some times we get ourselves in such a mess we think there is no way out.

We cannot serve God because we have too many other obligations and if we fail to

meet all those other obligations we will be destroyed.

But God can meet our needs.

He simply asks that we put Him first.

Matt 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of

            God, and his righteousness; and

all these things shall be added

            unto you.

     C. I was preventing a worse sin

Ex 32:22‑24 22 And Aaron said, Let not the

anger of my lord wax hot: thou

              knowest the people, that they

              are set on mischief.

23 For they said unto me, Make

us gods, which shall go before

us: for as for this Moses, the

man that brought us up out of

the land of Egypt, we wot not

              what is become of him.

24 And I said unto them,

              Whosoever hath any gold, let

them break it off. So they gave

it me: then I cast it into the

fire, and there came out this

              calf.

One thing that makes me sick is when God's people think they have to stoop to the sin

of the world in order to get people saved.

We don't need rock music to reach teenagers.

Our teenagers need the same thing we needed in order to get saved.

Someone who loves them enough to take them the gospel and to demonstrate a Christ like

  life before them.

We don't need more programs we need more sincere Christian men and women to be

  examples and testimonies.

We need more prayer and Bible study family devotional time.

We cannot excuse sin in our life.

Sin must be confessed and forsaken.

1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is

faithful and just to forgive us

our sins, and to cleanse us from

             all unrighteousness.

Job 9:20 If I justify myself, mine own

mouth shall condemn me: if I say,

I am perfect, it shall also prove

           me perverse.

Job 13:23 How many are mine iniquities and

sins? make me to know my

            transgression and my sin.

Psalms 38:18 For I will declare mine

iniquity; I will be sorry for

               my sin.

III. EXCUSE FOR NOT SERVING GOD

     A. I can't

  Moses

Ex 3:11 And Moses said unto God, Who am I,

that I should go unto Pharaoh, and

that I should bring forth the

children of Israel out of Egypt?

Ex 4:1 And Moses answered and said, But,

behold, they will not believe me,

nor hearken unto my voice: for they

will say, The LORD hath not appeared

         unto thee.

Ex 4:10 And Moses said unto the LORD, O my

Lord, I am not eloquent, neither

          heretofore, nor since thou hast

spoken unto thy servant: but I am

slow of speech, and of a slow

          tongue.

  I'm not a preacher,

  I'm not educated,

  I'm not rich,

God is not looking for a theologian or a college professor

  or a millionaire.

God is looking for someone who cares about the people around him and is

  willing to work.

  Rom 12:1‑2  1 I beseech you therefore,

brethren, by the mercies of God,

that ye present your bodies a

             living sacrifice, holy,

             acceptable unto God, which is

             your reasonable service.

2 And be not conformed to this

world: but be ye transformed by
