ABUNDANCE PROPORTIONAL TO OBEDIENCE

(Deut 8:1‑11)

God had a plan for the children of Israel.

All they had to do was follow God's instructions.

John 10:10 The thief cometh not, but for to

steal, and to kill, and to

destroy: I am come that they might

have life, and that they might

           have it more abundantly.

John 14:15 If ye love me, keep my

           commandments.

It is not always easy to keep God's commands,

but it is always right.

And it always has its rewards.

We will look at three reasons to keep God's

commands this morning.

I. vs 1 THAT YE MIGHT LIVE

2 Pet 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning

his promise, as some men count

          slackness; but is longsuffering to

          us‑ward, not willing that any

should perish, but that all should

          come to repentance.

Rom 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing,

and hearing by the word of God.

Salvation comes as a result of hearing

God's command and obeying.

No, I am not saying we are saved by works. I

am simply saying without trusting God's word

and by faith doing what the Bible says for

salvation, one cannot see the kingdom of God.

Acts 17:30 And the times of this ignorance

God winked at; but now commandeth

all men every where to repent:

Luke 13:3 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye

          repent, ye shall all likewise

          perish.

His commands come in the form of invitation.

Matt 11:28 Come unto me, all ye that labour

and are heavy laden, and I will

           give you rest.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he

gave his only begotten Son, that

          whosoever believeth in him should

          not perish, but have everlasting

          life.

II. THAT YE MIGHT MULTIPLY (vs 1)

God's purpose for every believer is that

    one bears fruit.

Prov 11:30 The fruit of the righteous is a

tree of life; and he that winneth

           souls is wise.

John 15:2 Every branch in me that beareth not

fruit he taketh away: and every

          branch that beareth fruit, he

purgeth it, that it may bring forth

          more fruit.

Matt 5:15 Neither do men light a candle, and

put it under a bushel, but on a

          candlestick; and it giveth light

unto all that are in the house.

Matt 10:32 Whosoever therefore shall confess

me before men, him will I confess

also before my Father which is in

           heaven.

Mark 5:19 19 Howbeit Jesus suffered him not,

but saith unto him, Go home to thy

friends, and tell them how great

things the Lord hath done for thee,

and hath had compassion on thee.

20 And he departed, and began to

          publish in Decapolis how great

things Jesus had done for him: and

          all men did marvel.

2 Tim 1:8 Be not thou therefore ashamed of

the testimony of our Lord, nor of

me his prisoner: but be thou

partaker of the afflictions of the

          gospel according to the power of God;

After finding out that his wife was going to live following a serious bout

with cancer a man in hospital ran to a complete stranger hugged her and

said she is going to make it.

Good news is to be shared.

A grandmother asked her 5 year old grandson what he learned in Sunday School.

He replied “my teacher must be Jesus’ grandmother,  that's all she talked about.”

Sometimes little things make a big difference.

Man came up to a woman on a busy street corner and said thank you.

He was a ticket collector for years and she always smiled.

She carried a Bible. He bought one and found Jesus.

III. THAT YE MIGHT POSSES THE LAND (vs 1)

     This is Canaan land.

It is not symbolic of salvation but of the abundant life in Christ.

God wants the believer to posses the abundant life.

What is the abundant life?

Sometimes I think we get the wrong idea of the abundant life.

  A. The abundant life includes testing.   vs 2

       1. To humble  vs 3

Man does not live by bread alone

all that man can work for, all the

          conveniences of life cannot fulfill

man's basic need for happiness and

          contentment.

Some of world's most wealthy men

          are also the most unhappy.

          a) God lead the children of Israel

             through a wilderness 40 yrs.

          b) God chastens as a man chastens

             his children

Heb 12:6‑7  6 For whom the Lord loveth he

           chasteneth, and scourgeth every

           son whom he receiveth.

7 If ye endure chastening, God

dealeth with you as with sons; for

what son is he whom the father

           chasteneth not?

       2. Testing proves

          Gives opportunity for the inward

          man to be manifested outwardly.

       3. Testing realize the true intent of

          the heart

Why do I go to church? Why do I

give? Why do I help others? Why do

I pastor? Why do I witness? Why do

          I teach sunday school?

Is the answer to please God with my life?

Is it because everyone expects it of me?

          Is it for self glory?

          Why do you do it?

If it is for any other reason than to please God.

Then testing will help us to re‑evaluate and adjust

          our motives for obedience.

The Goal of the believer should be

to hear the words "well done thy

          good and faithful servant"

  B. The Abundant life includes God's

     goodness   vs 7‑9

Ps 84:11 For the LORD God is a sun and

shield: the LORD will give grace and

glory: no good thing will he

         withhold from them that walk

         uprightly.

1.                brooks of water  ‑ peace

Phil 4:7 And the peace of God, which passeth

         all understanding, shall keep your

         hearts and minds through Christ

         Jesus.

2.                fountains and depths  springing from

                  valleys and hills

a.          fountains = steady stream of satisfaction

coming from the hills ‑  knowing that God will renew

strength to those who make it through the valleys

b.          depths = depths of insight,  understanding and character

coming from the valleys in life

3.                wheat barley = necessity

vines, fig trees, pomegranates  =  extra

4.                olive oil pureness = healing

                                       honey = sweetness

5.                bread no scarceness, no lack for anything

Phil 4:19 But my God shall supply all your

need according to his riches in

          glory by Christ Jesus.

6.                iron =  strength

          brass from hills = testimony

  C. The Abundant life includes thankfulness  vs 10

Col 3:17 And whatsoever ye do in word or

deed, do all in the name of the Lord

Jesus, giving thanks to God and the

         Father by him.

1 Thes 5:18 In every thing give thanks: for

this is the will of God in Christ

            Jesus concerning you.

The danger is that when God gives the

abundant life. We forget God and attibute the

wealth that we enjoy to our own efforts.

As we approach this new year, let us dwell in

the land of promise with humbleness and

thanks giving to God.
