A NEW YEAR ‑ TO MAKE NEW COMMITMENTS

LUKE 13:6‑9

The Tree is given one more year to grow or

to remain the same and be plucked up.

We stand at the threshold of a new year.

We have another year to serve. Will it be

  with mediocrocy or with fervor?

We must all make commitments to do better

  in 1994 than ever before.

  1. The tree belonged to a certain man

We belong to Jesus ‑ we have been bought

  with a price.

1 Cor 6:20 For ye are bought with a price:

             therefore glorify God in your

body, and in your spirit, which

             are God's.

1 Cor 7:23 Ye are bought with a price; be

not ye the servants of men.

2 Pet 2:1 But there were false prophets

also among the people, even as

            there shall be false teachers

            among you, who privily shall

            bring in damnable heresies, even

            denying the Lord that bought

            them, and bring upon themselves

            swift destruction.

  2. God expects fruit ‑ this is not an

unreasonable request of the one who bought

  us with such a price.

Matt 7:17 Even so every good tree bringeth

forth good fruit; but a corrupt

            tree bringeth forth evil fruit.

Matt 12:33 Either make the tree good, and

his fruit good; or else make the

             tree corrupt, and his fruit

corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit.

John 15:2 Every branch in me that beareth

not fruit he taketh away: and

            every branch that beareth fruit,

he purgeth it, that it may bring

            forth more fruit.

Romans 7:4 Wherefore, my brethren, ye also

are become dead to the law by

the body of Christ; that ye

             should be married to another,

even to him who is raised from

the dead, that we should bring

             forth fruit unto God.

  3. One day Jesus will return and we will

     give account of our lives.

Romans 14:10 But why dost thou judge thy

brother? or why dost thou set

at nought thy brother? for we

               shall all stand before the

               judgment seat of Christ.

John 5:22 For the Father judgeth no man,

            but hath committed all judgment

            unto the Son:

John 12:48 He that rejecteth me, and

receiveth not my words, hath one

that judgeth him: the word that

I have spoken, the same shall

judge him in the last day.

1 Cor 3:13 Every man's work shall be made

             manifest: for the day shall

declare it, because it shall be

revealed by fire; and the fire

shall try every man's work of

             what sort it is.

2 Cor 5:10 For we must all appear before

             the judgment seat of Christ;

that every one may receive the

             things done in his body,

according to that he hath done,

whether it be good or bad.

Heb 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men

once to die, but after this the

           judgment:

We must make the decision to serve God more

because God will not do that for us.

The keeper can dig and fertilize but the

final decision is up to you.

What will you do in this year?

How can I make and keep commitments?

  I. ACCEPT YOUR RESPONSIBILITY

    A. You have been chosen

John 15:16 Ye have not chosen me, but I

             have chosen you, and ordained

you, that ye should go and bring

forth fruit, and that your fruit

             should remain: that whatsoever

ye shall ask of the Father in my

name, he may give it you.

Eph 1:4 According as he hath chosen us in

him before the foundation of the

world, that we should be holy and

without blame before him in love:

    B. You have a purpose

Rom 8:28 And we know that all things work

together for good to them that

love God, to them who are the

           called according to his purpose.

Eph 1:4  4 According as he hath chosen us

in him before the foundation of the

world, that we should be holy and

without blame before him in love:

5 Having predestinated us unto the

          adoption of children by Jesus

Christ to himself, according to the

          good pleasure of his will,

Eph 1:9  9 Having made known unto us the

mystery of his will, according to

his good pleasure which he hath

          purposed in himself:

10 That in the dispensation of the

fulness of times he might gather

together in one all things in

Christ, both which are in heaven,

and which are on earth; even in

          him:

11 In whom also we have obtained an

          inheritance, being predestinated

according to the purpose of him who

          worketh all things after the

          counsel of his own will:

Eph 2:10 For we are his workmanship,

created in Christ Jesus unto good

           works, which God hath before

ordained that we should walk in

           them.

2 Tim 1:9 Who hath saved us, and called us

            with an holy calling, not

            according to our works, but

according to his own purpose and

grace, which was given us in

            Christ Jesus before the world

            began,

    C. You are an ambassador

2 Cor 5:20 Now then we are ambassadors for Christ,

as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in

Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.

  II. BY PRAYER

  Confess any known sin

1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is

faithful and just to forgive us

our sins, and to cleanse us from

             all unrighteousness.

Acknowledge and praise God in prayer

Matt 6:9 After this manner therefore pray

ye: Our Father which art in

           heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

John 15:5 I am the vine, ye are the

branches: He that abideth in me,

and I in him, the same bringeth

forth much fruit: for without me

            ye can do nothing.

  Trust God in prayer

Psalms 9:10 And they that know thy name

will put their trust in thee:

              for thou, LORD, hast not

              forsaken them that seek thee.

Matt 18:19 19 Again I say unto you, That if

two of you shall agree on earth

as touching any thing that they

shall ask, it shall be done for

them of my Father which is in

             heaven.

20 For where two or three are

             gathered together in my name,

there am I in the midst of them.

Luke 21:36 Watch ye therefore, and pray

always, that ye may be accounted

             worthy to escape all these

things that shall come to pass,

and to stand before the Son of

             man.

John 15:7 If ye abide in me, and my words

abide in you, ye shall ask what

ye will, and it shall be done

            unto you.

Heb 4:16 Let us therefore come boldly unto

the throne of grace, that we may

obtain mercy, and find grace to

           help in time of need.

James 4:8 Draw nigh to God, and he will

draw nigh to you. Cleanse your

            hands, ye sinners; and purify

            your hearts, ye double minded.

1 John 3:22 And whatsoever we ask, we

receive of him, because we keep

              his commandments, and do those

things that are pleasing in his

              sight.

  III. BY CONTINUED SERVICE

1 Cor 15:58 Therefore, my beloved brethren,

              be ye stedfast, unmoveable,

always abounding in the work of

the Lord, forasmuch as ye know

that your labour is not in vain

              in the Lord.

James 2:17‑20 17 Even so faith, if it hath

                not works, is dead, being

                alone.

18 Yea, a man may say, Thou

hast faith, and I have works:

shew me thy faith without thy

works, and I will shew thee

                my faith by my works.

                19 Thou believest that there

is one God; thou doest well:

                the devils also believe, and

                tremble.

20 But wilt thou know, O vain

                man, that faith without works

                is dead?

  2 Tim 2:3‑4  3 Thou therefore endure

hardness, as a good soldier of

              Jesus Christ.

               4 No man that warreth

              entangleth himself with the

affairs of this life; that he

may please him who hath chosen

              him to be a soldier.

  Don't Quit

Joshua 24:15 And if it seem evil unto you

to serve the LORD, choose you

               this day whom ye will serve;

               whether the gods which your

               fathers served that were on

the other side of the flood,

or the gods of the Amorites,

in whose land ye dwell: but as

for me and my house, we will

               serve the LORD.

1 King 18:21 And Elijah came unto all the

               people, and said, How long

               halt ye between two opinions?

if the LORD be God, follow

him: but if Baal, then follow
