Someone once correctly stated "the community

is only as good as the families that live

in it and the families are only as good as

  the church they attend."

In Ezekiel's time there were some who

attended church but failed to allow the

teaching and preaching of God's Word to do

  its work  in them.

Eze 33:31 And they come unto thee as the

            people cometh, and they sit

before thee as my people, and

they hear thy words, but they

will not do them: for with their

mouth they shew much love, but

            their heart goeth after their

  The Lord illustrates this condition.

Matt 13:20‑21 20 But he that received the

                seed into stony places, the

same is he that heareth the

                word, and anon with joy

                receiveth it;

21 Yet hath he not root in

                himself, but dureth for a

                while: for when tribulation

or persecution ariseth  because of the

word, by and by he is offended.

This is as seed falling on stony ground.

This illustrates a condition of the heart.

Why aren't we serving the way we should

Why are our news papers continually

  reporting crime?

We as a whole have a heart problem.

Because of this heart problem we are

  vulnerable to Satan's attacks.

Lets use the Word of God this morning as a

doctor would use a stethoscope to check the

  spiritual condition of our hearts.

Rom 3:9‑10  9 What then? are we better than

they? No, in no wise: for we have before

proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they

             are all under sin;

10 As it is written, There is none righteous,

             no, not one:

Rom 3:23 For all have sinned, and come

           short of the glory of God;

Jer 5:23 But this people hath a revolting

and a rebellious heart; they are revolted

           and gone.

God brings circumstances into our lives

that will cause us to have a broken heart

  or a hardened heart.

     A. A Hard Heart

Ex 5‑14 Pharaoh had a hard heart.

     1. Miracles were not noticed

Mark 6:52 For they considered not the

miracle of the loaves: for their

            heart was hardened.

     2. God's powerful Miracles are not

Mark 8:17 And when Jesus knew it, he

               saith unto them, Why reason

ye, because ye have no bread?

               perceive ye not yet, neither

               understand? have ye your heart

               yet hardened?

     3. There is unbelief

Mark 16:14 Afterward he appeared unto the

eleven as they sat at meat, and

             upbraided them with their

             unbelief and hardness of heart,

             because they believed not them

which had seen him after he was

4. True belief and trust in God is

        prevented by the hard heart.

John 12:40 He hath blinded their eyes, and

             hardened their heart; that they

should not see with their eyes,

             nor understand with their heart,

and be converted, and I should

             heal them.

  B. The broken heart.

     1. Brings one to realize he is needy.

Ps 109:22 For I am poor and needy, and my

            heart is wounded within me.

     2. Brings attention and healing

Ps 147:3 He healeth the broken in heart,

           and bindeth up their wounds.

     3. Brings conviction of sin and

     realization of its judgment.

Jer 23:9‑12  9 Mine heart within me is

              broken because of the prophets;

all my bones shake; I am like a

drunken man, and like a man

              whom wine hath overcome,

              because of the LORD, and

because of the words of his

10 For the land is full of

              adulterers; for because of

              swearing the land mourneth; the

              pleasant places of the

              wilderness are dried up, and

their course is evil, and their

              force is not right.

11 For both prophet and priest

are profane; yea, in my house

              have I found their wickedness,

              saith the LORD.

12 Wherefore their way shall be

unto them as slippery ways in

              the darkness: they shall be

              driven on, and fall therein:

for I will bring evil upon

them, even the year of their

              visitation, saith the LORD.

     4. There is promise to the broken

Ps 51:17 The sacrifices of God are a broken

spirit: a broken and a contrite

heart, O God, thou wilt not

John 16:21‑22 21 A woman when she is in

                travail hath sorrow, because

her hour is come: but as soon

as she is delivered of the

                child, she remembereth no

                more the anguish, for joy

that a man is born into the

22 And ye now therefore have

sorrow: but I will see you

                again, and your heart shall

rejoice, and your joy no man

                taketh from you.

1 Kings 8:46‑50 46 If they sin against

                     thee, (for there is no

                     man that sinneth not,)

                     and thou be angry with

                     them, and deliver them

                     to the enemy, so that

                     they carry them away

                     captives unto the land

                     of the enemy, far or

                     47 Yet if they shall

                     bethink themselves in

                     the land whither they

                     were carried captives,

                     and repent, and make

                     supplication unto thee

in the land of them that

                     carried them captives,

                     saying, We have sinned,

                     and have done

                     perversely, we have

                     committed wickedness;

                     48 And so return unto

                     thee with all their

                     heart, and with all

                     their soul, in the land

                     of their enemies, which

                     led them away captive,

                     and pray unto thee

                     toward their land, which

                     thou gavest unto their

                     fathers, the city which

                     thou hast chosen, and

                     the house which I have

                     built for thy name:

                     49 Then hear thou their

                     prayer and their

                     supplication in heaven

                     thy dwelling place, and

                     maintain their cause,

                     50 And forgive thy

                     people that have sinned

                     against thee, and all

                     their transgressions

                     wherein they have

                     transgressed against

                     thee, and give them

                     compassion before them

                     who carried them

                     captive, that they may

                     have compassion on them:

  Repentance brings forgiveness.

Without repentance there is no hope of salvation.

Luke 13:3 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye

repent, ye shall all likewise perish.

Eze 18:31 Cast away from you all your

            transgressions, whereby ye have

transgressed; and make you a new

heart and a new spirit: for why

will ye die, O house of Israel?

  Eze 36:26‑27 26 A new heart also will I

give you, and a new spirit

will I put within you: and I

will take away the stony heart

out of your flesh, and I will

give you an heart of flesh.

27 And I will put my spirit

within you, and cause you to

walk in my statutes, and ye

               shall keep my judgments, and

               do them.

     A. Man is a trichotomy ‑ that is man is

     made up of three parts.

     Body ‑ physical structure

     Soul ‑ Consciousness

Spirit ‑ Man's relationship to God

The difference between right and wrong.

     B. our spirit is dead at birth it was

     killed by Adam's sin

Rom 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin

entered into the world, and death

by sin; and so death passed upon

all men, for that all have sinned:

Rom 5:19 For as by one man's disobedience

many were made sinners, so by the

obedience of one shall many be

           made righteous.

     C. The spirit is quickened (made alive)

     by faith in Christ

Eph 2:1 And you hath he quickened, who were

          dead in trespasses and sins;

Eph 2:5 Even when we were dead in sins,

          hath quickened us together with

Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)

Rom 4:17 (As it is written, I have made

thee a father of many nations,)

before him whom he believed, even

God, who quickeneth the dead, and

calleth those things which be not

           as though they were.
