THE WICKEDNESS IN THE WORLD REVEALS MAN’S FOOLISHNESS

Rom 1:21-32

I. MEN REFUSE TO GLORIFY GOD

In vs 20 God says they are without excuse. Then He begins to elaborate.

Vs. 21 because:

A. When they knew God

Men have known and continue to know that there is a God.

1. The refused to glorify Him as God.

Glorify = 1392  doxazo (dox-ad'-zo);

from 1391; to render (or esteem) glorious (in a wide application):

KJV-- (make) glorify (-ious), full of (have) glory, honour, magnify.

Last week we looked at God’s attributes.

He is omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent and unchangeable.

They refuse to give God the honor which would acknowledge His attributes and Character.

They did not thank God for His thoughtfulness to man.

As did the Psalmist in Psalm 8

Ps. 8:1-9

1    O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens.

2    Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger.

3    When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained;

4    What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?

5    For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.

6    Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet:

7    All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field;

8    The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas.

9    O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!

They were vain in their imagination.

Vain = empty, foolish

They had become completely void of understanding concerning God.

Imagination = reasoning

Therefore they are foolish, void of understanding.

The heart is the seat of man’s emotion - the motivation center

Man’s heart may be cleansed, by confession through faith.

Matt 15:19-20

19  For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:

20  These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man.

Rom 2:15

15  Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)

Acts 15:9

9    And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.

But as God describes the condition of these individuals they did not cleanse themselves from this wicked imagination.

They continued in their total disregard for God and their hearts were darkened.

B. The result of refusal to recognize God.

1. They professed themselves to be wise.

Job 5:13

13  He taketh the wise in their own craftiness: and the counsel of the froward is carried headlong.

Job 11:12

12  For vain man would be wise, though man be born like a wild ass's colt.

Job 37:24

24  Men do therefore fear him: he respecteth not any that are wise of heart.

Prov 3:7-8

7    Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.

8    It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.

Prov 16:25

25  There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

2. They became fools

(comes from the greek word “Moraino”) from which we get our word “moron”.

Matt 15:19-20

19  For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:

C. Being foolish they:

Changed the glory of uncoruptible God into an image made like to coruptible man, birds, beasts, and creeping things.

Rather than to give God they honor and respect due Him, they gave honor to the creature.

Today men give great honor to the creatures and less and less honor to God.

They made images of the creatures they worshipped.

D. As a result of their condition:

1. God gave them up to uncleanness.

Prov 1:24-28

24  Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded;

25  But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof:

26  I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh;

27  When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you.

28  Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me:

Hosea 5:6

6    They shall go with their flocks and with their herds to seek the LORD; but they shall not find him; he hath withdrawn himself from them.

Hosea 9:12

12  Though they bring up their children, yet will I bereave them, that there shall not be a man left: yea, woe also to them when I depart from them!

2. They now were ruled by the lust of their own hearts.

Ps 81:11-12

11  But my people would not hearken to my voice; and Israel would none of me.

12  So I gave them up unto their own hearts' lust: and they walked in their own counsels.

Eph 4:22

22  That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;

2 Tim 2:22

22  Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

James 1:14-15

14  But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.

15  Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

3. They dishonored their bodies between themselves.

(vs 26-27)

God gave them up to

vile = greek (a-tee-mee-ah) infamy, disgrace

affection = an affection of the mind or a desire.

What did they do when God gave them up?

They committed homosexual acts.

This is refusing to use the human body as intended by God.

Doing that which is repulsive in order to challenge God’s authority.

Lev 18:22-24

22  Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.

23  Neither shalt thou lie with any beast to defile thyself therewith: neither shall any woman stand before a beast to lie down thereto: it is confusion.

24  Defile not ye yourselves in any of these things: for in all these the nations are defiled which I cast out before you:

Lev 20:13

13  If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.

I. They refused to Glorify God.

II. MEN REFUSED TO RETAIN GOD IN THEIR KNOWLEDGE

A. Not that they could not retain God in their knowledge but they did not like to retain God in their knowledge.

They knew what God designed but they refused to recognize and obey.

B. God gave them over to a reprobate mind.

Reprobate = rejected, worthless

The word reprobate means that God after inspection has found this to be worthless.

Mind of course is the intellect of man. The thinking process. The origin of behavior and action is the mind.

C. To to those things which are inconvenient.

Those things which are not fitting. In other words these are not the things for which God created man.

They defy the living God.

Not only are they not accomplishing the purpose for which the were created but they are purposely disobedient and purposely doing those things they know they should not.

Their darkened minds are filled with:

1. Unrighteousness

2. Fornication

3. Wickedness

4. Covetousness

5. Maliciousness

6. Envy

7. Murder

8. Debate

9. Deceit

10. Malignity

11. Whisperers

12. Backbiters

13. Haters of God

14. Despiteful

15. Proud

16. Boasters

17. Inventers of evil things

18. Disobedient to parents

19. Without understanding

20. Covenant breakers

21. Without natural affection

22. Implacable - unpleasable

23. Unmerciful

I. They refuse to glorify God.

II. They refuse to retain God in their knowledge.

III. THEY REFUSE TO REPENT vs 32

A. They know the judgment

That they are worthy of death.

B. They continue dispite the warning of their conscience.

C. They have pleasure in them that are doing                         wickedness.

This would include pornography.  T.V.  Magazines, etc...

They know as do we all that right is right and wrong is wrong.

But they continue, refusing to repent.
