GOD’S BUILDING BLOCKS
God is in the business of building churches.
We many times think of a church by the building.
When we think of the building of a church we think of the pastor.
But God is in the business of building churches.
And the material He uses is not surprising.
I have worked in some small churches and I have worked in some large churches.
I every church in which I have worked I noticed one thing that is constant.
God uses people to build churches.
God uses people to build churches on the mission field, here at home, and God is using people to build Hope Baptist church.
So we must ask, “whom is God using?”
Who are the people God is using to build His churches?
They are His people.
I. WHO ARE THEY?
A. They are Servants of God. (1-2)
1 Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God,
Phoebe was a servant of the church.
1 I commend unto you Phebe our sister, which is a servant of the church which is at Cenchrea:
2 That ye receive her in the Lord, as becometh saints, and that ye assist her in whatsoever business she hath need of you: for she hath been a succourer of many, and of myself also.
16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.
18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.
19 I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.
20 For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness.
21 What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death.
22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.
1 Pet 2:16
16 As free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God.
B. They are helpers of God. (3-5)
Aquila and Priscilla were Paul’s helpers in Christ.
Moses had helpers to hold up his arms.
11 And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed: and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.
12 But Moses' hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.
Thank God for the helpers here at Hope Baptist Church.
We could not operate without them.
Those who mow the grass, change light bulbs, fix the commodes, clean, bring water for the speaker, and I could go on and on.
God bless everyone who helps in God’s ministry.
1 Cor 12:28
28 And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.
These helpers are the ones who are not always in the limelight.
They are content to simply help wherever they are needed.
They aren’t trying to tell everybody what to do and how to do it.
They just want to help wherever they are needed.
Thank God for the helpers at Hope Baptist Church.
C. They are laborers of God. (6,12)
Mary, Tryphena and Tryphosa, Persis
1 For the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard.
35 I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.
36 But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.
37 Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few;
38 Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.
2 Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.
God is using laborers to build His Church.
Thank God for the laborers. Those who are willing to go out into the harvest fields and bring in those who have no shepherd.
Those without Christ need a Shepherd.
1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.
They need guidance offered by the man of God placed in their area.
15 And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding.
Thank God for the laborers tonight.
Those who spend many hours going door to door bringing children, men and women to Christ.
II. BUT WHO ARE THEY?
They are the chosen of God. (13)
16 So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen.
1 Pet 2:9
9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:
5 Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,
II Th 2:13-14
13 But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:
14 Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
God has indeed chosen you to be a part of the church.
God chooses those who He knows in His foreknowledge will accept Christ to build His church.
You made a decision for Christ, but God knew you would.
You could not be saved aside from God’s grace, God’s work, God’s calling.
But, don’t be surprised that God knew you would be saved and that He sent someone to tell you about Christ.
God knows all things from the beginning He knows the end.
The fact that God knows who will be saved and how He will be saved only increases the responsibility of the soul winner.
They are the Approved of God. (10)
2 Tim 2:15
15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
Before we can be approved or disapproved we must be tested.
If your works were put under the microscope of God would He approve?
Does He approve the method?
Our methods of bring people together must be approved of God, not man.
Man may approve easily, but what of God?
Is bingo a means to reach and end?
Is rock music a means to an end?
God forbid that we should use the world’s standard to bring people to God and then try to force God to accept it because we are good people trying to get others saved.
The method matters.
Unless people are willing to give sin by repentance they cannot come to Christ and be born again.
3 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.
Thank God for those who are working under God’s blessing, whose works are approved of God.
They are the beloved of God. (8,9,12)
God loves those who are His.
37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.
38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,
39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
III. BUT WHO ARE THEY?
They are our Kinsmen. (7)
3 For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh:
Those who make up the church are our kinsmen.
Our fellow Americans, our friends, those of the same nationality.
They are our families. (10,11).
Our families are those whom God wants in building His church.
3 Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house: thy children like olive plants round about thy table.
9 Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes have seen, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life: but teach them thy sons, and thy sons' sons;
10 Specially the day that thou stoodest before the LORD thy God in Horeb, when the LORD said unto me, Gather me the people together, and I will make them hear my words, that they may learn to fear me all the days that they shall live upon the earth, and that they may teach their children.
Thank God for the families who worship God together.
May God be able to say of you and me, what he said of Abraham.
19 For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.
They are our mothers, our sister and our brethren.
God wants our families our mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters.
Do you have a loved one you haven’t talked to about Christ in a while?
Maybe a letter of concern would not hurt.
If you love them and your concerned about their soul why not write or call them.
God wants to use the simple things of the world to build His church.
Things like you and me and our kinsmen and our families.
1 Cor 1:27-31
27 But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;
28 And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are:
29 That no flesh should glory in his presence.
30 But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:
31 That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.
5 Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?
1 Pet 2:4-5
4 To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious,
5 Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.
