GOD GRANT US LIKE-MINDEDNESS

ROMANS 15:5-6

Rom 15:5-6

5    Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus:

6    That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

One thing that God wants from His people is that they unite in the effort of winning the lost to Christ.

There is no more admirable work or service that one could render our Savior than to win another person to Christ.

In order for the church to succeed in carrying out the great commission we must unite.

The more united we are in our effort the more effective we are in reaching the lost.

Let us examine closely what the Lord is telling us tonight through the Apostle Paul under the influence of the Holy Spirit of God.

I. THE RESOLVE FOR LIKE-MINDEDNESS.

The resolve comes from God.

God has determined to use the Church as the instrument to take the Gospel to the lost.

Matt 16:17-18

17  And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.

18  And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Matt 28:19-20

19  Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

20  Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Acts 1:8

8    But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

God reaches out with patience.

Col 1:11

11  Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness;

Joel 2:13

13  And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil.

2 Pet 3:9

9    The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

2 Pet 3:15

15  And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you;

God is indeed longsuffering and aren’t we glad that He is?

How long did He call you be fore you answered the call?

To salvation?

To faithfulness to church services?

To tithing?

To witness?

To teaching?

To full time service?

Is He still calling? Are you still backing away?

Softly and tenderly He calls with much patience.

God reaches out with passion.

God is consoling. He comforts and alleviates the fears and concerns of those who would refuse to serve.

God’s tool chest is not made up of the strong and mighty.

He used a shepherd boy to slay the giant that threatened the army of Israel.

He used Gideon and three hundred men to repel the Midianites from Israel. The Midianites were thousands in number and more experienced.

He uses the weak things and the foolish things to accomplish His purpose so that He can get the glory.

1 Cor 1:27-29

27  But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;

28  And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are:

29  That no flesh should glory in his presence.

God consoles us with His Word.

Matt 6:33

33  But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Phil 4:13

13  I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

Phil 4:19

19  But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

5

Jer 33:3

3    Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.

Ps 81:10

10  I am the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt: open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it.

God supplies the resolve, the determination to get His work accomplished through like-mindedness.

He does so with His great patience and compassion.

II. THE REASON FOR LIKE-MINDEDNESS.

Rom 15:6

6    That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The reason is singular, “to glorify God”.

The word “glorify” means to honor.

We honor God by accomplishing the purpose for which He has created us.

Eph 2:10

10  For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

Rev 4:11

11  Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.

6

Col 1:16-19

16  For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:

17  And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.

18  And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.

19  For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell;

The only way we can accomplish the purpose that God has for us is to work through the local church.

Using the talents and the gifts given to us in order to carry out the great commission given in Matt 28:19-20.

III. THE RESULTS OF LIKE-MINDEDNESS.

There are two results of the like minded, united effort of God’s people working through the church.

The Gospel is spread in the Power of the Holy Spirit.

The only way we can carry out the task of getting the Gospel to the lost is by the Holy Spirit.

1. We must have one mind.

Phil 2:5-8

5    Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

6    Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:

7    But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:

8    And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

We must have the mind of Christ.

2. We must have one message.

That Jesus died for sinners.

There is only one way to heaven, that is through the Lord Jesus Christ.

There are not many roads leading to heaven. There is only one, and it is narrow.

Matt 7:13-14

13  Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:

14  Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

There are many denominations. There are many teachings concerning heaven and how to get there.

We are not all going to the same place.

We are not all going to get to heaven.

Matt 7:22-23

22  Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?

23  And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

We have but one message for the lost and that is Jesus saves.

We must have one mind and speak with one voice.

The Gospel is spread.

And

B. God is glorified by the Work of His Son.

When we put Christ first and the carrying of the Gospel to the ends of the world as our task in life, the God is glorified.

John 15:8

8    Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.

Phil 1:11

11  Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God.

Gal 5:22-23

22  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,

23  Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

God is glorified when we are filled with the fruit of the Spirit, because only then can we reach others for Christ.
