KNOWING THE TIME
Knowing the time, that it is high time to awake.
High time means that it is time now, this instant.
It is time to awake.
Awake means to bring to a state of consciousness.
Out of sleep a state of unconsciousness.
Many of us have been given life.
We are saved but we are unconscious of the danger that faces us.
All around us are lost people.
Neighbors, friends, family all without Christ destined to an eternity of pain in the lake of fire.
We live in a world growing ever closer to God’s judgment.
Salvation is nearer than when we believed.
Everyday that we live draws us closer to the day that we will die or be raptured and then our time to reach the lost, to help those in need will be gone.
We are alive now. We have an opportunity now to reach the lost with the Gospel, to help those Christians who are struggling. Will we sleep or will we awake out of sleep and do that which God has asked us to do.
The night is far spent. We are surrounded by the dark night of this world.
We must awake as a people.
We must seize the opportunity while it is available.
I. AWAKE TO AN AWARENESS OF OUR SITUATION.
WE MUST BE AWARE THAT OUR TIME IS RUNNING OUT. (vs 11)
14 Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.
1 Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.
THE TIME OF SINFULNESS IS RUNNING ON.
Sin is a hard taskmaster taking our children and loved ones. It never relents.
Sin is always present on every doorstep.
It waits the opportunity to take our families.
If we sleep, if we rest, it is there to take advantage of our lack defense.
Sin is a hard taskmaster. It robs the sinner of life and ultimately it gives death.
23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
13 Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful.
Sin hardens. The more one sins the harder his heart will grow toward God.
13 But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.
15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.
Sin is running on it is relentless.
It stands at our doorstep waiting for us to let down our defenses.
II. CAST OFF THE WORKS OF DARKNESS.
Night cannot occupy the same space with light at the same time.
Neither can good and evil occupy or rule the same heart at the same time.
Therefore we must:
Make provision for the spirit to control.
(vs 13) walk honestly
18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;
How can I be filled with the Spirit?
Filled means controlled. If I want to be controlled by the Spirit I must feed the spiritual appetite.
If I want the flesh to control I will feed the fleshly appetite.
Remember the illustration given about two dogs of same breed and age, trained by the same trainer.
Someone asked if they got in a fight, which one would win.
The answer came back the one who is feed the most.
When the flesh and the Spirit battle, the one that is fed the most will win.
We are told in verse 14 not to make provision for the flesh.
Do not provide an atmosphere or the means for sinful activity or thoughts.
Rioting is giving into the flesh through anger and mob control.
Drunkenness is giving into the flesh by breaking down the wall of conscience.
Under the influence of alcohol men commit all kinds of offenses because the natural defense to evil is torn down.
Our conscience is our defense against committing crime and sin.
Even the lost person has a set of standards he will follow.
But, when alcohol or drugs wipe out the conscience, there is no restraint and flesh is in complete control.
III. MAKE NOT PROVISION FOR THE FLESH.
The apostle lists several symptoms that indicate to a person that the flesh is in control.
Chambering – the Greek word here is (Koitias).
From which we get our English word coitus.
It means the union of male and female in sexual intercourse.
Wantonness – this means filled with or controlled by sensual desire.
Strife – bitterness or contention toward others.
Envy – to harbor ill feelings toward others because of their good fortune.
IV. PUT ON THE WARRIOR’S ARMOR.
Armor of light.
The armor of light is the Lord Jesus Christ.
When we get saved Jesus comes into our heart and the Holy Spirit baptizes us into Him.
1 Cor 12:13
13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.
27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
When we put on this light we are saved.
There is salvation in no other.
12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
We must know for sure that we are saved before we can help others.
Job did not doubt his salvation.
25 For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth:
26 And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God:
Isaiah taught assurance.
2 Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation.
3 Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation.
We are told that we may know that we are saved.
I Jn 5:13
13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.
We are told that the Holy Spirit seals us.
2 Cor 1:21-22
21 Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God;
22 Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.
13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.
30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
So if you are saved you have an armor of light for salvation.
PUT ON THE ARMOR OF MIGHT.
11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;
15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;
Truth – always tell the truth.
The truth will set you free.
Righteousness – always do right.
Gospel of peace – carry the Gospel with you always give it freely to those in which you come into contact.
Faith – faith in God for He never fails.
Helmet of salvation – know for sure your saved.
Word of God – carry it in your heart.
12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
13 Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.
