ESSENTIALS FOR SALVATION

Rom 10:12-21

The Apostle Paul has told the reader that salvation does not come by works.

Now he tells us what does bring salvation.

If not by works of righteousness which we can perform then what?

There are five essentials for salvation.

I. THE SINNER (vs 12)

All have sinned

There is no difference between the Jew and the Greek.

Rom 3:23

23  For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

Rom 5:12

12  Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

Before one can be saved he must realize that he is indeed a sinner.

The Jews were having a problem with this fact.

Rom 10:21

21  But to Israel he saith, All day long I have stretched forth my hands unto a disobedient and gainsaying people.

Paul says that Israel is a disobedient and gainsaying people.

Gainsaying according to Webster’s dictionary means disputing or to stand in opposition to the truth.

Isa 65:2

2    I have spread out my hands all the day unto a rebellious people, which walketh in a way that was not good, after their own thoughts;

Israel had refused to agree with the Scriptures and refused to be obedient unto salvation.

God has spread His hand to saved all who will receive, sadly many will reject.

II. NEED A SAVIOUR (vs. 12-13)

Thank God we have One who died for our sin.

We have One to pay the price.

Jesus was capable.

2 Cor 5:21

21  For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

Jesus paid the price for all mankind.

1 Peter 2:24

24  Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

III. NEED A SOUL WINNER (vs 14-16)

God is calling us all to bear the good news found in the Gospel.

Pro 11:30

30  The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.

Wisdom is manifest by winning souls.

A person who thinks himself to be wise can test his wisdom by the efforts he makes to win others to Christ.

It is not wise to keep the Gospel to ourselves. We must share it.

Isa 52:7

7    How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth!

Nah 1:15

15  Behold upon the mountains the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace! O Judah, keep thy solemn feasts, perform thy vows: for the wicked shall no more pass through thee; he is utterly cut off.

Not all will receive.

Isaiah 53:1

1    Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed?

IV. NEED THE SCRIPTURE (vs 17)

We do not go from house to house, grocery store to hospital, to nursing home, to jail, throughout our community to propagate some philosophy that you or I came up with.

We carry a message from heaven.

John 12:48

48  He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.

2 Cor 5:18-20

18  And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;

19  To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.

20  Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.

There must be a sinner, there must be a Saviour , there must be a soul winner, there must be a message for the soul winner to carry and there must be Holy Spirit conviction.

V. NEED THE HOLY SPIRIT (18-21)

When the man of God meets the sinner with the Word of God and is filled with the Spirit of God the power of God is manifest.

Either a sinner receives Christ or rejects Christ but he knows God’s messenger has visited him.

It is then that the Holy Spirit has full authority to bring the conviction necessary for salvation.

John 16:7-11

7    Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

8    And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

9    Of sin, because they believe not on me;

10  Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;

11  Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.

Rom 2:15

15  Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)

God help us to be obedient to take the Word of God to the sinner, in a way that the Holy Spirit of God can work His convicting power to win them to Christ.

A good testimony by the believer is important in reaching the lost for Christ.

May God build in us that character and integrity that will allow the Holy Spirit of God to have total control and power as we witness to those about us, both in word and action.
