JACOB HAVE I LOVED

ESAU HAVE I HATED

Rom 9:6-13

Mal 1:2-3

2    I have loved you, saith the LORD. Yet ye say, Wherein hast thou loved us? Was not Esau Jacob's brother? saith the LORD: yet I loved Jacob,

3    And I hated Esau, and laid his mountains and his heritage waste for the dragons of the wilderness.

I. THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE GOSPEL (vs 6)

The Gospel changes the creature

2 Cor 5:17

17  Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

When we receive Christ as Savoir we are not the same people we were before we were saved.

Eph 4:22-24

22  That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;

23  And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;

24  And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

Col 3:10-11

10  And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:

11  Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all.

Changed the character

Eph 2:10

10  For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

I Jn 2:27

27  But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.

Changed the criterion

The criterion by which my eternal destination will be judged has been changed.

It is not according to my holiness, my righteousness, my goodness nor my works.

It is according to God’s grace and the work of God’s Son and my Jesus Christ.

I am in Christ and God sees me in Christ.

Rom 3:24-25

24  Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:

25  Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

Rom 8:1-2

1    There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

2    For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.

Rom 8:39

39  Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

2 Cor 5:19

19  To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.

Gal 6:15

15  For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature.

II.  THE DISTINCTIVENESS OF GRACE (vs 7-10)

Faith vs. flesh

The Israelite was an Israelite not because of he had Abraham as his federal head.

He was an Israelite because the faith in God. The nation of Israel in based in faith.

God’s children are born of faith not flesh.

By faith Abraham left Ur of the Chaldees to go to a place that God called.

By faith Isaac was born of Abraham at 100 and Sarah at 90.

Heb 11:11-12

11  Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised.

12  Therefore sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, so many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable.

Heb 11:17-18

17  By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son,

18  Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called:

The nation of Israel has its very being steeped in faith.

Promise vs Presence

God’s promises can be counted upon.

Jacob the younger would be the father of the 12 children that make up the 12 tribes of Israel.

Esau’s presence did not make him the father of the nation. Rebecca’s faith in God’s promise made Jacob the father of the nation.

Gen 25:23

23  And the LORD said unto her, Two nations are in thy womb, and two manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels; and the one people shall be stronger than the other people; and the elder shall serve the younger.

Esau’s mere presence did not make him God’s chosen.

Nothing can give one favor with God other than the acceptance of God’s grace in receiving God’s promises of salvation in Christ Jesus.

Eph 2:8-9

8    For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

9    Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Rom 2:28-29

28  For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh:

29  But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.

Gal 6:15-16

15  For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature.

16  And as many as walk according to this rule, peace be on them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God.

Gal 4:21-31

21  Tell me, ye that desire to be under the law, do ye not hear the law?

22  For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman.

23  But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by promise.

24  Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar.

25  For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children.

26  But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.

27  For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: for the desolate hath many more children than she which hath an husband.

28  Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise.

29  But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now.

30  Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.

31  So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.

III. THE FAIRNESS OF GOD’S SOVEREIGNTY

(vs 11-13)

God is creator of all things.

God created all things [visible and invisible] for His glory.

God is the rightful owner of all things and has absolute right to rule over all.

Matt 20:15

Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good?

God exercises His Authority in the universe.

Eph 1:11

In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:

1 Tim 6:15-16

15  Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords;

16  Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen.

1 Chr 29:11

11  Thine, O LORD, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O LORD, and thou art exalted as head above all.

Ps 115:3

3    But our God is in the heavens: he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased.

Isa 45:9

9    Woe unto him that striveth with his Maker! Let the potsherd strive with the potsherds of the earth. Shall the clay say to him that fashioneth it, What makest thou? or thy work, He hath no hands?

Eze 18:4

4    Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.

God is indeed rightful creator and owner of all things.

God is in control of all things.

Isa 14:24

24  The LORD of hosts hath sworn, saying, Surely as I have thought, so shall it come to pass; and as I have purposed, so shall it stand:

Isa 14:26-27

26  This is the purpose that is purposed upon the whole earth: and this is the hand that is stretched out upon all the nations.

27  For the LORD of hosts hath purposed, and who shall disannul it? and his hand is stretched out, and who shall turn it back?

Eph 1:11

11  In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:

1. God has an eternal purpose in all things (namely His glory and His pleasure)

Rev 4:11

11  Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.

Ps 33:11

11  The counsel of the LORD standeth for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.

God’s purpose was made in eternity and it remains unaltered.

God’s purpose is never wrong.

Isa 48:11

11  For mine own sake, even for mine own sake, will I do it: for how should my name be polluted? and I will not give my glory unto another.

God is absolutely holy and cannot purpose any wrong.

God’s purpose originated in God’s freedom.

Ps 135:6

6    Whatsoever the LORD pleased, that did he in heaven, and in earth, in the seas, and all deep places.

4. God is omnipotent and able to do all that He desires.

Daniel 4:35

35  And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?

God is in control and has always and will always be in control of His creation.

God permit certain things and God determines not to permit some things, but, all things are working together to bring Glory to God and to accomplish His eternal plan and purpose.

Someone has said, ”with infinite power and infinite wisdom God has from all eternity past, decided and chosen and determined the course of all events without exception for all eternity to come.”

God has chosen those who by faith accept His grace to be His children.

God has determined to extend that grace to them and to accept them as His very own.

They are his firstborn.

God chose the Israelite because of their faith in Him.

Ex 4:22

22  And thou shalt say unto Pharaoh, Thus saith the LORD, Israel is my son, even my firstborn:

Hos 11:1

When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt.

And God chooses those who will receive Him by faith today.

John 1:12

12  But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

God rejected Esau before His birth because God knew Esau in eternity.

God knew Esau would reject Him and His plan.

God knew Esau.

God knew Jacob.

God knows you.

God wants you to be saved, God wants you to accomplish the purpose for which you were created.

God will provide your every need in accomplishing His purpose.

We must only yield to His purpose.
