PAUL A DEBTOR

ROM    1:8-17

As we study this portion of Scripture we see Paul’s compassion and the reason for it.

 vs 8)

1. Paul thanks God for the faith of these Roman          Christians. Vs 9)

2. Paul prays for them without ceasing.

That means that Paul has an appointed time to pray and that when he prays, he never ceases to pray for the Christians at Rome.

Vs 10-11)

3. Paul requests of God that he may see his Roman brethren.

4. The reason he wants to see them is to impart some spiritual gift. To the end that they would be established.

Paul has the desire of every true evangelist and pastor.

Paul’s prayer is that God would use him in the capacity in which he was called.

Paul wants to preach to them so that the preaching may be opportunity for the Holy Spirit to clinch some truth of God’s Word in their hearts.

To the end that they would be established.

WHAT A GIFT!

Vs 12)

5. Paul expounds further on the meaning of established.

1. That he may be comforted

2. That they may be comforted

3. This comforting would come as a result of a mutual faith in God.

Vs 13)

6. Paul says he wanted to come to Rome sooner but God led him elsewhere.

7. Paul wants to come to Rome to win souls to Christ and to help the saint to grow.

Vs 14) Paul considers himself a debtor  -  to all mankind.

Why?

In order to owe a debt someone would have to have received something and owe payment for that commodity.

Did Paul receive something? YES

Payment for his sin.

Who paid the debt of Paul’s sin.

Christ.

We are bought with a price?

The blood of Christ.

Then how does Paul owe other people anything? It was Christ who paid the debt.

Luke 19:10

10  For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.

John 20:19-21

19  Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.

20  And when he had so said, he shewed unto them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the Lord.

21  Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you.

We all owe that debt to mankind.

We owe it to Christ to win others to Him.

How can we pay our debt?

I. BY PREACHING THE GOSPEL (vs 15)

(witnessing)

1 Cor 1:17-18

17  For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.

18  For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.

Rom 10:13-17

13  For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

14  How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?

15  And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!

16  But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?

17  So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Luke 19:10

10  For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.

John 20:21

21  Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you.

God uses his preachers and God uses lay people just like you.

Mark 16:15

15  And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

You are an ambassador.

2 Cor 5:20

20  Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.

II. BY PROTECTING THE GOSPEL (vs 16)

(not ashamed)

Luke 7:22-23

22  Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached.

23  And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.

1Thes 2:13-14

13  For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.

14  For ye, brethren, became followers of the churches of God which in Judaea are in Christ Jesus: for ye also have suffered like things of your own countrymen, even as they have of the Jews:

1 Tim 4:6-7

6    If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained.

7    But refuse profane and old wives' fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness.

2 Tim 2:3-4

3    Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.

4    No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.

III. BY APPROPRIATING THE GOSPEL (vs 17)

(from faith to faith)

Rom 3:3-4

3    For what if some did not believe? shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect?

4    God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged.

Hab 2:4

4    Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith.

Gal 3:11

11  But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith.

Heb 10:38-39

38  Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.

39  But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.

Heb 11:6

6    But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Heb 11:1

1    Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

By faith

1. We understand that the worlds were framed by the           Word of God.

2. Abel offered his sacrifice to God.

3. Enoch was translated

4. Noah prepared the ark

5. Abraham followed God from Ur of the Chaldes to a land of promise

6. Sarah conceived and bare Isaac

7. Abraham offered up Isaac

8. Moses chose to be counted with his people rather than enjoy the sinful life of the Egyptian

9. Faith brought the walls of Jerico down

10. The harlot Rahab was saved

By faith tonight you can be saved.

By faith you can trust God with your problems.
