CONFORMING TO GOD’S WILL

Rom 8:26-28

Once again these verses must be taken in context with the entire chapter.

Remembering that chapter eight is answering the questions raised in chapter seven.

Rom 7:18

18  For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.

Rom 7:19

19  For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.

Rom 7:24

24  O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?

The law of the Spirit delivers from the law of sin.

(Rom 8:2)

Then the Apostle goes on to tell how the Spirit performs that which is good in us.

Last week we learned that the body will indeed be redeemed, but not this side of heaven.

So we live in the body and we must overcome its vulnerabilty to temptation.

Now we come to the actual working of the Holy Spirit in the hearts of men.

Rom 7:18-22

18  For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.

19  For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.

20  Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.

21  I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.

22  For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:

A saved man, though his desire is to do good, cannot perform the good that he would.

He must have the Holy Spirit of God in control.

Eph 5:18

18  And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;

Lets look at what the Word of God says concerning the working of the Holy Spirit in man.

I. THE COMPARISON.

( vs 26)

Like wise - in like manner

A. Future redemption of a dead body

As the old body is redeemed in verses 19-23, the spirit of the believer that was deadened in the fall is quickened by the Holy Spirit of God.

Ps 119:154

154 Plead my cause, and deliver me: quicken me according to thy word.

Ps 119:156

156 Great are thy tender mercies, O LORD: quicken me according to thy judgments.

B. Present restoration of a dead spirit.

Eph 2:1

1    And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;

In Rom 8:11

11  But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

God promises to quicken the mortal bodies.

But He has already quicken our Spirit. (Eph 2:1)

Now that which we would we have power to do by allowing the Holy Spirit to intercede on our behalf.

Rom 7:19

19  For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.

II. THE COMPASSION

In this we will speak of the manner in which the Holy Spirit of God intercedes for the believer.

Rom 8:26-29

26  Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

A. Holy Spirit helps our infirmities

Holy Spirit sees us as we are yet He knows what we need and lifts the desires of the inward man of the believer beyond the vail of the flesh.

B. Holy Spirit intercedes on our behalf.

We do not know how to pray because the flesh is selfish. How do we discern whether we are in the flesh or in the Spirit?

Sometimes we cannot.

The Holy Spirit of God takes our needs to God the Father.

He knows our every weakness and flaw.

C. Brings comfort to the disheart and discouraged.

John 14:16-18

16  And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;

17  Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

18  I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.

D. Gives power to the weak

Acts 1:8

8    But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

Acts 4:31

31  And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.

E. Encourages unity among the brethren

Eph 4:3-6

3    Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

4    There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;

5    One Lord, one faith, one baptism,

6    One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

The Holy Spirit of God with great compassion intercedes for man to God.

“Groanings that cannot be uttered”

A careful study of these word would render this meaning:

A compassionate cry to God that cannot be expressed in speech.

What kind of cry cannot be heard. It is the cry of a broken heart.

How does one put into words the emotional feelings that come with the yearning to see a lost mother or dad, brother or sister come to Christ.

How can you put the emotional feeling of seeing hundreds and thousands of children without Christ and knowing that in their current situation they will never have the confidence of being in the will of God.

How can one put the emotional feeling of looking into the eyes of a teenager who has been rear without Christ and  is now out of control into words.

How can one put into words the emotion that comes from a desire to do something about these tragedies.

Words can not take those feelings to God. Only the Holy Spirit of God can carry those messages to God.

And only God knows the deficiencies that we must overcome in order to make a difference.

III. THE COMPLETION

Rom 8:27-28

27  And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

28  And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

God searches the hearts.

He knows all. Though we may have that deep desire to win the lost there is sin.

We still fall short.

The Holy Spirit of God sends the emotional feelings that we cannot express with words and God answers by sending into our lives the situations, that will enable us to accomplish those great feats according to His purpose.

God wants us to make a difference in our communities.

God wants us to win those lost children and their parents to Christ. God wants to show His great blessings to them just as He has poured them upon you and me.

God wants to use ordinary people like you to reveal His power to others.

2 Cor 3:17-18

17  Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.

18  But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

Eph 3:16-19

16  That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;

17  That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,

18  May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height;

19  And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.
