Rom 1:2-7

The apostle Paul in speaking of the Gospel, which he is called to proclaim, must now explain further the Gospel.

The Gospel is the instrument by which we are all saved and the object of our faith.

Let us examine the statements made by Paul in explaining the Gospel and apply the truth, which we learn tonight to our lives.

For we must have a strong foundation in order to overcome the world and accomplish the work God has for us.

Gen 3:15

15  And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

Job 19:25-27

25  For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth:

26  And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God:

27  Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another; though my reins be consumed within me.

Isa 28:16

16  Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.

Isa 59:20

20  And the Redeemer shall come to Zion, and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith the LORD.

Jer 33:15

15  In those days, and at that time, will I cause the Branch of righteousness to grow up unto David; and he shall execute judgment and righteousness in the land.

God knew before the foundation of the world  that man would fall to Satan’s temptations to sin.

And would therefore need a Savior.

God knew from the time that He created man that He would need a means by which to save him.

1 Cor 2:7

7    But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory:

Eph 1:4

4    According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:

Eph 3:11

11  According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord:

2 Tim 1:9-10

9    Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,

10  But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:

1 Pet 1:18-21

18  Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers;

19  But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:

20  Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,

21  Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God.

Jesus Christ is the Messiah.

The Jews are waiting for Him.

But He has already come.

They crucified Him.

And His blood is upon their heads.

But it is upon our hands if we refuse to give them the Gospel.

Matt 27:24-25

24  When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it.

25  Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.

Who is the Messiah?  The Savior?

A. MADE OF THE SEED OF DAVID - the kingly lineage

The Old Testament Scriptures bear out the fact that He is to be of the tribe of Judah the Kingly lineage.

Gen 49:10

10  The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.

Isa 65:9

9    And I will bring forth a seed out of Jacob, and out of Judah an inheritor of my mountains: and mine elect shall inherit it, and my servants shall dwell there.

Jer 31:31-33

31  Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:

32  Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to

bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD:

33  But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.

He is to come from the lineage not only of Judah but specifically of the lineage of David.

Isa 9:6-7

6    For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

7    Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.

Isa 11:1

1    And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:

Jer 23:5

5    Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth.

He is to be born in Bethlehem.

Micah 5:2

2    But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.

Then we see this is all according to Scripture.

According to the flesh.

Matt 1:1

1    The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

Matt 1:16-17

16  And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

17  So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations.

Matt 2:1

1    Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,

Jesus is 100% man.

Born of a woman he suffered as a man.

Heb 2:9-18

9    But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.

10  For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.

11  For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one: for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren,

12  Saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee.

13  And again, I will put my trust in him. And again, Behold I and the children which God hath given me.

14  Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;

15  And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.

16  For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham.

17  Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.

18  For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.

John 3:16

16  For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Jesus was and is 100% God.

Heb 1:8

8    But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.

Heb 1:10

10  And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands:

Isa 9:6

6    For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Acts 20:28

28  Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.

I could go on and on with Scripture after Scripture but we will stop here.

Not only does the Scripture proclaim Jesus but also the Holy Spirit confirms it.

The resurrection proves it. (Vs 4)

The Gospel is promised in the Scripture.

The Gospel proclaims the Son of God.

By provoke I mean it provides the needed stimuli.

Or plainly it stimulates us to serve the Lord with all our strength.

We are provoked by Jesus and by the Good news that He offers.

A. By Jesus

He shed His blood in our behalf.

1 Peter 2:24

24  Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

It was he who shed tears and sweat drops of blood at Gethsemane.

Who stood before Pilate.

Was mocked by Herod’s soldiers.

Was whipped with the cat of nine tails.

Was led through the streets and mock by the mob to the point of having His beard plucked from His face.

It was He who carried that heavy cross to Golgotha.

Who was nailed hand and foot to the tree and died for no crime except He loved you and was willing to bear your sins.

Knowing that it was for you He died should provoke us to service.

B. The good news of the Gospel also provokes us to good works.

We were lost and now are found.

We were sinners now we are saints.

We were filthy now we are clean.

We were miserable we now have peace.

Verse 5

The reason we have received the Grace and calling to reach and teach dying humanity for Christ.

Notice the phrase used to identify Christianity.

“For obedience to the faith among all nations”

Instead of saying the “saved”, the Apostle Paul says “the obedience to the faith”.

The saved are those who are obedient to the faith.

We want to encourage and help as best we can all who will come to Christ.

We wear the name Christian.

We should wear it worthily.

We should adorn the Scripture.

Titus 2:10-14

10  Not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things.

11  For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,

12  Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;

13  Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;

14  Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.
