SIN’S CURSE AND GOD’S GRACE

Rom 5:12-21

I. ORIGIN OF SIN

Rom 5:12

12  Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

A. Sin originated with Satan.

Eze 28:15-17

15  Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.

16  By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire.

17  Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee.

Isa 14:12-15

12  How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!

13  For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:

14  I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.

15  Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.

Luke 10:16-18

16  He that heareth you heareth me; and he that despiseth you despiseth me; and he that despiseth me despiseth him that sent me.

17  And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name.

18  And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.

 1 John 3:8

8    He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

Satan was created perfect, without a flaw, to shine before a holy God.

One day at some point after he was created Satan had a thought of power. That God was weak and he could over power God and sieze power.

Satan revolted and took a 1/3 of the angels og heaven with him.

Rev 12:3-4

3    And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.

4    And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born.

Satan came to earth. Took the form of a serpent and tempted Eve.

B. Adam’s disobedience.

Eve being the weaker of the two humans. Eve had not been present when God announced that man was not to take of the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

She had heard from Adam.

Therefore she would have been the easiest to convince.

Adam was the one to bear the responsibility for the act.

For God gave the command to Adam.

God created man in His own image.

Man was created in the image of God.

But man was not God.

Man was created holy and innocent but not without the ability to sin.

Gen 1:26-28

26  And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

27  So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

Gen 5:1

1    This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him;

Adam then was created in the image of God, without sin.

Man could have lived eternally had he not sinned.

For death came by sin.

Gen 2:16-17

16  And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:

17  But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

When Adam ate of the tree his eternal spirit died. He was changed. He went from being eternal to being temporal, he went from being incorrupt to being corrupt.

Therefore his offspring would be born to the same condition.

Job 14:4

4    Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one.

Adam died spiritually and began to die physically.

C. Adam’s descendants

Rom 5:13

13  (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law.

From Adam to Moses there was no law.

Therefore it was not the law that corrupted man.

The law was not the corrupting agent.

Adam’s descendants from until Moses were guilty of sin even though there was no law to condemn them.

Rom 5:14

14  Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.

Adam’s descendants did not disobey God’s command.

It was Adam who disobeyed.

But, in his disobedience he corrupted himself and took on a sinful nature and it is that sin nature that fell unto all mankind.

We sin because we are sinners.

II. THE CONSEQUENCE OF SIN

A. The first death.

When Adam sinned he begin to die physically.

Death is spoken of in a three fold way.

There is physical death and spiritual death and eternal death.

Man is born spiritually dead.

That is because of our sin nature.

Eph 2:1

1    And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;

Eph 2:4-5

4    But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,

5    Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)

Col 2:13

13  And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;

Man is born spiritually dead.

He is dying everyday that he lives physically. Unless Jesus comes he will die and return to dust.

Gen 3:19

19  In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

Ps 104:29

29  Thou hidest thy face, they are troubled: thou takest away their breath, they die, and return to their dust.

B. The second death.

Rev 20:14-15

14  And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

15  And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

                                                                                               Rev 21:8

8    But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

The second death is eternal death in the lake of fire, eternally separated from God.

A death in which there is no mercy, no grace, no goodness nor kindness.

C. The the extent of the corruption and condemnation

Not only did Adam’s sin affect all mankind, but it condemns every human being ever born.

The only person ever born of a woman who was not affected by Adam was our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

He was born of woman but not of a man.

He is the Son of God.

Rom 5:12

12  Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

III. THE GRACE OF GOD

Job 25:4

4    How then can man be justified with God? or how can he be clean that is born of a woman?

ROM 5:15

15  But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.

The apostle is showing a parallel between Adam and Christ.

They accomplished complete opposites, but they parallel in that one man brings sin and the other brings redemption.

A. The free gift is the grace which God extends.

Eph 2:8-9

8    For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

9    Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Look at the times the words “free gift” are spoken. Three times in four verses.

And the word “gift” is spoken six times in four verses.

God’s grace is not for sale if it were it would not be grace.

Where sin came by Adam the free gift is much more in every

aspect.

What advantages do we experience then by the grace of God through Christ our Lord?

B. Justification (Rom 5:16,18)

Rom 5:16

16  And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification.

Judgment came through Adam to condemnation of many.

But in Christ the many come to justification by the one.

C. Righteousness. (Rom 5:17,19)

Death came by Adam to all men. And life came to all men through Christ.

For those who accept the abundance of grace the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.

We are given the ability to live a life of righteousness.

1 Peter 2:24

24  Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

2 Cor 5:21

21  For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

We can live a righteous life.

Does not say that we are perfect.

It does say we are not to live in sin.

1 Peter 1:15-16

15  But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;

16  Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.

Phil 3:9

9    And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:

We do not get to heaven based upon our righteousness.

Eph 2:13

13  But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.

Isa 61:10

10  I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels.

When God looks upon us He sees us through the robe of righteousness provided by the shed blood of His Son Jesus Christ.

But by the grace of God we can indeed live in victory.

We don’t have to sin.

1 Cor 6:20

20  For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.

Gal 2:20-21

20  I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

21  I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.

D. Eternal Life

Death physical, spiritual, and eternal came by Adam.

Spiritual life, abundant life and eternal life comes through Christ.

1. Spiritual

1 Cor 2:14

14  But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

Acts 2:38

38  Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

1 Cor 2:12

12  Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.

2. Abundant life.

John 10:10

10  The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

God wants us to experience a life of promises and victories.

3. Everlasting

John 3:16

16  For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

John 10:10

10  The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

John 10:28

28  And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.

By one man sin and all the condemnation and punishment  that goes with it came in.

By another grace and salvation and all the benefits that go with it came and does much more abound.

We are born sinners corrupt and sinful but salvation in Christ Jesus is available to all who will but receive.
