GRACE THROUGH FAITH

Rom 4:13-25

Eph 2:8-9

8    For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

9    Not of works, lest any man should boast.

God in His grace extends His mercy to fallen mankind in the person of His Son.

Man then is saved by grace. But the instrument of that grace (God’s unmerited favor) is faith.

Grace is the undeserving gift from God to man. Faith is the hand that receives it.

The promise in grace is abundant life here on earth and beyond the grave.

What was the promise?

Rom 4:13

13  For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.

That Abraham and his seed should be heir of the world.

Promise is given to Abraham.

Before the law is given.

Gen 12:2-3

2    And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:

3    And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.

Promise is expanded to include the ends of the earth.

Isaiah 2:1-4

1    The word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem.

2    And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the LORD's house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it.

3    And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.

4    And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.

Nations would be blessed in the seed of Abraham because of obedience. Abraham believed that God could raise Isaac from the dead.

Gen 22:18

18  And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.

The promise is confirmed to Isaac.

Gen 26:3-5

3    Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father;

4    And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed;

5    Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.

Ps 2:8

8    Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.

All the blessings of abundant life given to Abraham and his posterity because of faith in God which rendered simple obedience.

Obedience comes as a result of unwavering faith in God.

If we believe God we will obey God.

Let us therefore be challenged tonight to believed God.

I. GRACE’S PROMISE REVEALED BY FAITH.

Abraham believed God would give him a son in his old age.

A. Abraham believed God for guidance.

Heb 11:8-10

8    By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.

9    By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:

10  For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.

B. Abraham believed God for a son

Rom 4:13

13  For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.

Rom 4:19-20

19  And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sarah's womb:

20  He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;

C. Abraham believed God would raise his son from the dead.

Heb 11:17-19

17  By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son,

18  Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called:

19  Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure.

God’s promises can only be revealed to those who will live life by faith in God.

Rom 10:17

17  So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

II. GRACE’S PROMISES RECEIVED BY FAITH.

Rom 4:14-16

14  For if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect:

15  Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression.

16  Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,

A. Promises come by faith not works

It is God who accomplishes mighty works of salvation, provision, courage and strength.

He makes soul winners out of drunkards, Sunday School teachers out of men and women who have been soiled with iniquity, missionaries out of drug addicts.

He builds mighty churches that carry out the great commission from simple, ordinary people like you and me.

He does it all through those who would dare to trust Him in complete obedience.

God can accomplish nothing through the works of the flesh.

John 15:5

5    I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

And it is by faith that Abraham received the promise, not by the law, not by circumcision. God’s promise to Abraham was received in faith and God honored the promise because He knew Abraham’s faith was strong.

All that God accomplished through Abraham came as Abraham simply trusted God as a little child would trust his father.

Mark 10:13-15

13  And they brought young children to him, that he should touch them: and his disciples rebuked those that brought them.

14  But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.

15  Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein.

III. GRACE’S PROMISE IS RELEASED BY FAITH.

Rom 4:16-17

16  Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,

17  (As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were.

Abraham is said to be the father of us all.

1. His earthly seed is Isaac.

Gen 21:3

3    And Abraham called the name of his son that was born unto him, whom Sarah bare to him, Isaac.

Rom 9:7

7    Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called.

2. His spiritual seed is all believers.

Gal 3:7

7    Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham.

 3. His single seed is Christ.

Gal 3:16

16  Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.

Rom 4:23-25

23  Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him;

24  But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead;

25  Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.

God’s promises are released from Him to the believer by faith.

One has access to God’s promises by faith.

Salvation, regeneration, protection, provision, all come by faith.

Heb 11:5-6

5    By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.

6    But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

God will accomplish mighty works through those who will simply trust Him by faith.

Will you let God have complete control of you?

It will require complete trust in Him.

It will result in the power of God being released to accomplish His purpose.
