ALL MANKIND FOUND GUILTY
Last week we saw the advantage of the Jew. To whom much is given is much required.
The Jew was given the Word of God.
God dealt with the Jew almost exclusively.
Yet, the Jew was as guilty of sin as the Gentile.
What we must realize as we study this portion of Scripture is the list of do’s and don’ts given in the law to the Jew has not produced a better man.
The path of works for justification can never lead to heaven.
We must all receive the Lord Jesus Christ as personal Saviour in order to go to heaven.
I. THE LAW DOES NOT PRODUCE A BETTER MAN
9 What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin;
A. All are sinners
Though they had possession of the law, the Jew had still sinned and were therefore no better than the Gentile.
10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:
Thought the law had shown the difference between right and wrong it could not make one righteous.
11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.
Though it is filled with knowledge it could not give understanding to the readers.
Though it tells of God’s wonderful love and compassion, it could not restore fellowship between God and man.
It could not cause man tot seek after God. It produced no desire to know God or to seek to please Him.
Though we were commanded to love God with all our heart the command did not bring with it the ability.
29 But if from thence thou shalt seek the LORD thy God, thou shalt find him, if thou seek him with all thy heart and with all thy soul.
12 And now, Israel, what doth the LORD thy God require of thee, but to fear the LORD thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the LORD thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul,
37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
38 This is the first and great commandment.
B. All are out of the way
God has a will for everyone. It is not His will that any should perish.
2 Peter 3:9
9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
Ther is a way God planned and there is a way of destruction.
8 And an highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called The way of holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it; but it shall be for those: the wayfaring men, though fools, shall not err therein.
9 Who is wise, and he shall understand these things? prudent, and he shall know them? for the ways of the LORD are right, and the just shall walk in them: but the transgressors shall fall therein.
6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Man’s way leads to detruction.
12 There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.
24 The way of life is above to the wise, that he may depart from hell beneath.
C. All are unprofitable
12 They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
God has a will for man.
13 For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb.
14 I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.
15 My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
16 Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.
5 Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.
God has a reason for creating every person. When one does not do what God intended he is unprofitable.
As the fig tree in:
6 He spake also this parable; A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came and sought fruit thereon, and found none.
7 Then said he unto the dresser of his vineyard, Behold, these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and find none: cut it down; why cumbereth it the ground?
8 And he answering said unto him, Lord, let it alone this year also, till I shall dig about it, and dung it:
9 And if it bear fruit, well: and if not, then after that thou shalt cut it down.
9 Doth he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded him? I trow not.
10 So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do.
II. LAW DOES NOT PRODUCE A CLEAN NATURE IN MAN
A. Mouth is corrupt
13 Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips:
14 Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness:
The mouth of the unregenerate spews forth from the wicked heart, like an open sepulcre.
The speech does not please God, but comes before Him as the stinch of rotten dead bodies.
They use their tongues to deceive.
They change the truth to match their wicked desires.
In fact there is no truth in them.
B. Their heart is corrupt.
The unregenerate man even with the law has a heart filled with selfishness and carnal desire and out of the mouth escapes the true inward emotions.
18 But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man.
19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:
Poisonous is their speech.
They can destroy a person with their accusations and half truths and think nothing of it.
Lifting self up at others expense.
Their mouth is full of:
Not partially full or half empty, but full.
That means there is no room for anything else.
Cursing the dictionary defines as calling upon God to bring injury upon someone or something.
Bitterness - filled with cynicism and rancor, ill will toward others.
C. Their actions are corrupt.
15 Their feet are swift to shed blood:
Ready at a moments notice to shed innocent blood.
16 Destruction and misery are in their ways:
Needing only the slightest excuse to bring destruction to another person or their property, because they are of no value to the perpetrator.
In the mind of the unregenerate the only thing that matters ultimately is their own satisfaction and comfort.
17 And the way of peace have they not known:
They have not found the way of peace.
18 There is no fear of God before their eyes.
10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.
They lack the very basic concept of wisdom and knowledge, to fear the One who can cast both body and soul into the lake of fire.
They know right from wrong but they have no fear of punishment for sin.
III. THE LAW DOES NOT PRODUCE OVERCOMING POWER IN MEN
A. Keeping the law is impossible for man
19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.
If man could be saved by the law, then he would have to be capable of total and complete obedience.
Not only capable but he would have to accomplish it.
No one can claim to have been perfect.
Therefore to those who would say, “we are saved by keeping the law”, their mouth is stopped.
We are all guilty under the law.
B. Justification by the law is impossible for man.
20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
The law gices the knowledge of sin, but cannot give the power to overcome sin.
Only Jesus can give the power to over come sin. That by the Holy Spirit.
1 Cor 2:4
4 And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:
1 Cor 6:11
11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.
17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.
2 Tim 1:7-8
7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
8 Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God;
2 Tim 1:14
14 That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us.
